Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the core prompt by discussing whether smoking should be made illegal and presenting some basic arguments regarding its health hazards. However, the task is significantly compromised by length: the text contains only 136 words, falling far short of the mandatory 250-word minimum for Task 2. Consequently, the ideas are severely underdeveloped, lacking the depth, extension, and fully supported arguments required to access higher bands. The writer expresses a clear opinion that smoking causes serious illnesses and that people ignore warnings, but the lack of development and brevity restrict the score. Under the official descriptors, this response aligns best with a Band 4 due to the minimal and underdeveloped treatment of the task resulting from under-length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The text lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as a single, dense block of text, which severely hampers the overall structure and logical progression. While there are some basic cohesive devices attempting to link ideas—such as 'also', 'and', and 'then'—their usage is often mechanical and awkward. Referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in phrases like 'This thing is blocking our chest' where the antecedent is vague. Ideas do not flow logically from one point to the next in a well-managed essay structure; rather, sentences are strung together haphazardly. This organization fits the Band 4 descriptor, where information and ideas are not arranged coherently enough to guide the reader smoothly through a sustained argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, featuring frequent word-choice and collocation errors that strain the reader. Examples of inaccurate usage include 'injurious yo our health', 'strong slowly Poisson of life', 'avernes', 'harmeness', and 'are do smoking'. The writer attempts some topic-specific terminology like 'Heart attack' and 'advertisement', but the overall lexical range is extremely limited and inadequate for an academic task. Spelling errors are frequent ('Poisson', 'avernes', 'harmeness'), and inappropriate word forms ('anyone can smoking', 'people's are do smoking') impede smooth reading. This lexical profile corresponds directly to Band 4, where vocabulary is basic, repetitive, and prone to errors that cause strain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple or poorly attempted complex sentence structures that are frequently faulty and ungrammatical. Examples of severe structural errors include 'when anyone can smoking that time smoke can generate and that enters in our lungs that smoke are blocking our lungs', 'This blocked lungs can't filter the air we are taking as breathing', and 'every one not understanding the situation'. Punctuation is also poorly handled, often lacking proper sentence boundaries or comma splices. Errors are pervasive throughout nearly every sentence, frequently distorting meaning and causing significant difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with Band 4 descriptors, characterised by very limited range and frequent errors.
