Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether smoking should be made illegal and presenting a clear position agreeing with the notion. However, the ideas are only partially developed. For instance, the first body paragraph mentions the impact on passive smokers and cites a survey, but the supporting details remain limited and somewhat unclear. The second body paragraph discusses the influence on youngsters, yet this point is also underdeveloped and lacks precise elaboration. Additionally, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short of the minimum 250-word count. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend and support all main ideas with more thorough explanations and maintain the required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays some overall organization with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which provides a coherent overall arrangement. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different ideas, such as the effects on passive smokers and the influence on youth. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and repetitive, relying on standard transitional markers like 'To commence with' and 'To elaborate it.' Referencing and logical progression could be smoother to guide the reader more clearly through the arguments. To progress to the next level, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without overusing formulaic phrases and ensure clearer logical links between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for expressing basic points about the topic, such as 'public places', 'lung cancer', and 'government'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'consumptions' instead of consumption, 'lifes' instead of lives, 'myraid' instead of myriad, 'behing' instead of behind, 'cigrate' instead of cigarette, 'Therfore', and 'distroy'. Furthermore, attempts to use less common vocabulary often result in inaccurate forms. To improve lexical resource, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and pay closer attention to natural word collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures. While the writer attempts some complex sentences, these attempts are frequently faulty and accompanied by frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical and punctuation issues include 'people are lost their lifes', 'which i will elaborate', 'smoking is worse for passive smoker or non smoker which put people lifes', 'they also inhale a oxygen', and 'regime should banned'. These issues stem from problems with verb forms, article usage, singular/plural agreement, and relative clauses. To achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic and complex sentence patterns, significantly reducing the frequency of grammatical errors.
