Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, taking a clear position that smoking should be made illegal due to health risks and societal impacts. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of cancer and vision loss is stated briefly without sufficient explanation or elaboration, and the example of a person getting lung cancer is overly simplistic. Furthermore, an important negative constraint affects this criterion: the response contains only 197 words, failing to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand significantly on each supporting point with thorough explanations, robust examples, and ensure the word count requirement is fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident through the use of basic sequencing markers such as 'one of the primary reason' and 'In conclusion', yet the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion is frequently disrupted by inadequate and repetitive cohesive devices. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous transition between sentences in the second body paragraph. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more accurate variety of linking words to smoothly connect ideas and ensure logical progression throughout the text, while strengthening paragraph structures to clearly separate main points.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, resulting in noticeable lexical and spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are frequent spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'smooking', 'detriemntal', 'Goverment', and 'dugs', along with word formation errors like 'life threaten' instead of 'life-threatening'. The range of vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire to include less common items, demonstrate better control of word formation and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'smoking developed he major illness', incorrect article usage, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns. Punctuation errors are also noticeable, such as erratic full stops in the middle of sentences ('For example . a pseron'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with improved structural accuracy and better control over basic grammatical rules.
