Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task partially by taking a clear position that smoking should be made illegal. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive throughout the essay. While the writer mentions relevant health issues such as 'heart attack, lungs problem' and touches upon passive smoking, these ideas are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting examples or extension. The writer tends to over-generalise and circle back to the same points about banning smoking and government punishment without fully exploring the broader socio-economic or practical implications of an outright ban. To reach a higher band, the response would need to present well-developed ideas with fully elaborated supporting arguments rather than relying on brief, repetitive assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation evident with basic paragraphing, but the essay lacks a clear overall progression. The movement between ideas feels disjointed, as sentences frequently jump from health impacts to family threats, then to government intervention, and later to social media trends without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are generally inadequate, repetitive, or mechanical, often relying on abrupt shifts rather than logical connectors. Pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'produced by the indiviual what is smoking,' which disrupts the flow of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical structuring needs significant improvement to ensure a clearer overall progression of thought throughout the piece.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic stance on the topic. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'addiction', 'punishment', and 'passive smokers', but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'very injuries to health' instead of injurious, 'daily intake of smoking' instead of smoking daily, and 'secondery reason'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'strickly', 'habbitat' instead of habit, and 'genertion'. These lexical inaccuracies and noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary from achieving the flexibility and precision required at higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or compound structures that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'smoking has become one of most discussed issue', 'Smoking should been banned', 'People has addiction', and 'It tooks over genertion'. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after periods and awkward clause boundaries, are also noticeable. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and stem from a lack of control over basic and complex grammatical patterns alike.
