Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response sits at a minimal level because it fails to meet the word count requirement, containing only one hundred and forty-six words compared to the minimum requirement of two hundred and fifty words. Regarding the content, the student attempts to address the prompt by expressing a clear position that smoking should be made illegal due to health risks. However, the ideas remain very limited and under-developed, lacking detailed reasoning or extended examples. To move to a higher band, the writer must expand the response to meet the length requirement and fully develop their main arguments with thorough explanations and concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The essay displays some basic organisation, such as dividing the writing into multiple paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The transition between sentences feels disjointed, and the cohesive devices used are extremely inadequate or faulty, such as abrupt shifts between thoughts without proper linking words. Referencing is also unclear in places, making the flow difficult to follow. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to organise ideas logically throughout the response, ensuring that each paragraph flows smoothly into the next using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, utilizing everyday terms like "good life," "look cool," and "bad efforts" which strain the reader's understanding. There are notable word choice, word form, and spelling errors throughout the text, such as "cigrates," "iiilegal," "scared," and "reagrding." These lexical inaccuracies reflect a limited range that struggles to communicate ideas with precision. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their vocabulary range, learning accurate word forms, and using appropriate collocations relevant to academic topics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at more complex formations. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation appear throughout the text, including issues with verb forms, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and non-standard capitalization, such as "smoking can cause to our health" and "goverenment should take strict action on it." These errors frequently distort meaning and cause difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, punctuation, and grammatical agreement.
