Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a partial position that smoking should not be made illegal entirely, but that stricter rules and regulations should be implemented instead. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, which restricts the depth of the argument. While the writer touches on reasons why people smoke, such as stress and peer influence, and suggests alternative measures like banning marketing and public smoking, these points lack clear extension and detailed support. The overall progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, and the writer's position, although discernible, is not always clearly expressed throughout the response. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to provide fully developed arguments with relevant examples and maintain a clearer, more consistent position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression from beginning to end. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is somewhat erratic; for instance, the discussion on why people smoke mixes abruptly with solutions in the same section. Cohesive devices are used very inadequately or repetitively, with over-reliance on basic connectors and repetitive phrasing like 'for example' and 'rather than'. Referencing is also unclear at times, making it difficult to follow the logical flow of arguments. To improve, the writer should ensure each paragraph has a single clear central topic, utilize a wider variety of cohesive devices accurately, and establish a logical and smooth progression of ideas across the entire text.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts to use less common items, such as 'dopamine' and 'addiction', but these are frequently misspelled or misused, as seen in 'defenetly', 'rapadaly', 'dipretion', and 'muatreals'. Additionally, collocation and word forms are often inaccurate, such as 'do smoking' instead of 'smoke' and 'lisunse' instead of 'license'. These lexical inadequacies prevent the expression of precise meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word formation and collocations, and significantly improve spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement, such as 'the many student, teenagers and people is phase', missing articles, and incorrect prepositions inside grammatical patterns. Punctuation is also poorly controlled throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with good control, reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors, and ensure better accuracy in verb tenses and agreements.
