Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position on the issue of making smoking illegal. The main arguments are generally relevant, but some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the point about health issues and youth imitation is supported with personal examples, such as 'my uncle suffering from cancer' and 'my younger cousin', showing a solid lower-band response while also hinting at a more extended exploration of societal impacts. However, the counter-argument regarding business disruption is somewhat limited and under-developed, preventing the essay from reaching a higher level. Overall, the ideas presented are sufficient to form a coherent stance on the topic while meeting the requirements of addressing both sides of the prompt to a satisfactory degree.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, alongside distinct body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. While basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secodly', and 'In conclusion' are utilized to structure the response, referencing is not always clear, as seen with ambiguous pronoun use like 'this' and 'it' which occasionally disrupts the flow of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, yet the internal progression within paragraphs can feel disjointed due to abrupt transitions. To improve, the writer needs to ensure smoother links between sentences and clearer referencing to enhance the overall readability and logical flow of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to convey basic points about the dangers of smoking. The writer attempts less common vocabulary such as 'prohibited', 'imitate', and 'eradicate', but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, including 'indviduals', 'Cigerate', 'sever', 'matrial's', and 'ciggerate'. These spelling and word-form errors, along with occasional awkward collocations like 'fetal health issues' instead of fatal, can cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher standard, the student needs to expand their lexical range and pay closer attention to accurate word formation, spelling, and precision in terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple and emerging complex sentence forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly concerning article usage, subject-verb agreement, and pluralization, such as 'harmful chemical it contains' instead of chemicals, and 'There financial resources may got damage'. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, and prepositional patterns within phrases occasionally falter. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a need for stronger control over basic and complex grammatical structures alike.
