Student answer (Band 6.0)
Smoking is considered an unhealthy habit, causing many illnesses. Due to this many individuals believe that, it should be considered illegal and banned. I completely agree with that assertion because banning it can eradicate the problem from its root and many lives can be saved.
Banning cigrattes can help save a significant amount of lives. Many studies have confirmed that smoking can cause many disease such as asthma, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, erecticle dysfunction and many more. Thus putting a stop in smoking can prevent this diseases saving several lives. For instance, nowadays, many youngsters are addicted to smoking and the researchs claim that, the number of cancer patients have been increasing rapidly in younger generation. Furthermore, when someone is addicted to smoking, they lose their purpose of lives and end up choosing wrong path.
Additionally, if smoking becomes completely illegal, the problem can be cured from the roots. There have been several attemps to prevent people from smoking. However, none were succesfull, to end this problem once and for all. For that its root cause need to be identified and plucked completely. If governments were to impose strict consequences for breaking the law of smoking, citizens tend to follow the rule strictly and the act of smoking can be prevented.
In conclusion, smoking is a vile act that needs to be eradicated completely and imposing strict rules and regulation is the optimal approach for that issue. In addition, if it can be implementedproperly, many lives can be saved and a better future can be obtained.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing that smoking should be made illegal. The main arguments, such as health benefits and eradicating the issue from its roots, are relevant and establish a clear overall direction. However, some ideas remain under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the claim that smokers lose their purpose in life is introduced abruptly and left without sufficient explanation or specific support. To move toward higher bands, the writer needs to provide more thorough elaboration and concrete examples for every supporting point rather than moving quickly between claims.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the text is appropriately divided into paragraphs that each deal with a distinct aspect of the argument. Logical progression is visible as the essay moves from health consequences to preventative measures. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or relies on simpler connectors like 'Furthermore' and 'Additionally'. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences could be smoother. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should use more sophisticated and varied cohesive devices while ensuring that paragraph internal transitions feel completely natural and fluid.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's stance with terms such as 'assertion', 'eradicate', and 'consequences'. There are, however, noticeable spelling errors such as 'cigrattes', 'disease' instead of diseases, 'succesfull', and 'implementedproperly'. The writer also attempts less common vocabulary with some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'erecticle dysfunction' and 'put a stop in smoking'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, placing the vocabulary firmly in the mid-range. Expanding the range of precise academic terminology and paying closer attention to spelling will help elevate this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('if smoking becomes completely illegal') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as unnecessary commas ('believe that, it should'), missing articles ('from its root'), and preposition usage ('stop in smoking'). Pluralisation and agreement issues also occur, such as 'researchs claim that, the number of cancer patients have been increasing'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication, meaning the reader can easily grasp the intended meaning. To improve, the writer must focus on greater accuracy in complex sentence patterns, punctuation rules, and subject-verb agreement.
