Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, as it is 2 words short of the 250-word minimum (excluding 8 words copied from the prompt). The writer presents a clear position that smoking should be made illegal due to health risks, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of 'air pollution' is confused, as the writer paradoxically suggests that smoking 'prevent[s] air pollution' before later stating they 'don't make air pollution'. Supporting arguments regarding financial waste and health issues lack sufficient extension and rely on repetitive assertions rather than deep elaboration. To move to a higher band, the response must meet the minimum word count and fully develop all supporting ideas with clear explanations and relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraph boundaries are somewhat arbitrary, and the final paragraph functions as an abrupt list-like conclusion rather than a cohesive summary of main points. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and at times inaccurate, such as using 'according to my view point they say absulitely wright' as a transition, which fails to link ideas smoothly. Pronoun referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to guess what terms like 'they' refer to in certain contexts. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to logically sequence ideas, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, and ensure smooth transitions between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of non-standard forms include 'mada', 'absulitely', 'wright', 'crase' (craze), 'asstama' (asthma), 'cigrates', 'vage' (vape), 'hooka', 'hebits', 'healty', and 'chearity'. While the writer attempts less common topics related to health and lifestyle, the frequent lexical errors impede fluent reading. To progress to a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, improve spelling accuracy, and use words with correct collocation and form, such as 'habits' instead of 'hebits' and 'asthma' instead of 'asstama'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in complex constructions. There are persistent mistakes in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and word order, such as 'when person smoking cigrates... it also cause lungs problem', 'smoker people kill their own health', and 'smoking crase... are increase day by day'. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'conclusion, stop smoking get good health...'. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns, ensure correct verb forms and subject-verb agreement, and use punctuation accurately.
