Student answer (Band 5.0)
Smoking is very dangerous for our health, this can cause serious illinesses and i think that this should be made illigal. Selling cigarettes at minors is illegal but we can see that a lot of young people start smoking around 14 years old because is a trend, they see adults smoke and they whant to seem like them. This is a really important problem, in the future can cause a lot of healty problem. Not long time ago i had a bad experience with smokers, i was in a restaurant with my boyfriend and the waitress told us that she had a table for two only outside, i agree. The problem was that all the dinner i was near a lady that she smoked minimum ten times, after the dinner i told her that all the smoke was going to me, she told me that we were outside end she could smoke. She was very rude and she ruined our dinner. in conclusion i think that is very important to made the smoke illegal, for the healty of the people that everyday use a lot of cigarettes and they are going to have a lot of problem, not only for them but also the people that are in the nearby, that they have to stand the smell and in the future theyAmight have healty problem too. a lot of smokers have a stange voice and a bad small expetially old peaple.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You state a clear view that smoking should be illegal and give relevant reasons, including harm to smokers and people nearby. The restaurant story illustrates the effect of second-hand smoke, so it supports your position with a personal example. However, the response addresses the issue only partially: it focuses mainly on one unpleasant incident and makes broad claims about young people and future health problems without explaining them. It also does not consider why a complete ban might be difficult or distinguish between banning smoking in public places and making smoking itself illegal. The response is 9 words below the required minimum. Develop two or three reasons more fully and explain how each supports your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation: you introduce your opinion, give a reason about young people, describe a restaurant experience, and finish with a conclusion. The personal example is relevant, and phrases such as “in conclusion” signal the ending. However, the response is largely one continuous paragraph, so the reader has little visual guidance through its different points. Progression is also limited: the discussion moves from youth smoking to the restaurant incident and then to smokers’ voices and smell without clear links. Some connections are awkward, such as “in the future can cause” and the final sentence beginning “a lot of smokers.” Use separate paragraphs for your position, developed reasons/examples, and conclusion, and connect each point explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use enough basic topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “cigarettes,” “smokers,” “restaurant,” and “smoke.” The account of the dinner also gives some specific detail. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are inaccurate or repetitive, which can make the message harder to follow. Examples include “healty problem,” “bad small,” “stange voice,” and “made the smoke illegal”; these do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also frequent spelling errors, such as “illinesses,” “illigal,” “whant,” and “peaple.” Build a more precise vocabulary for health effects and public policy, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses explaining why young people smoke and what happened at the restaurant. The main position is generally understandable. However, the range of structures is limited, and attempts to join several ideas often produce faulty sentences. For example, “Smoking is very dangerous for our health, this can cause…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, while “because is a trend” omits a subject. Other problems include “i agree” after a past-tense account and “all the dinner i was near a lady that she smoked,” where tense and clause structure are unclear. Use shorter, complete sentences when needed, and practise accurate past-tense narration and subordinate clauses.
