Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that smoking causes serious health concern and should be banned from everywhere. I completely agree that it should be considered illegal.

One of the main reason why I believe in banning smoking is the unimaginable health problems that occurs. Cancer being one of the most life threatening problem which is caused by smoking. For example, according to The ARY News, in Pakistan the number of individuals smoking has tremendously increased and due to that the number of people getting diagnosed with cancer has rose significantly over the past 2 years. Moreover, teenagers finds it cool to light a cigarette and has access to it pretty easily. As a result, they get addicted to smoking and the outcome is life threatning as told previously.

Another important reason is that the trade of cigarettes is a big industry and people who are running it would never want to experience any threat to their business. Government should take strict action in banning cigarettes which will eventually help the future generation as they won't get exposed to such harmful activity. For instance, if a teenager in any country can buy a pack of cigarette, the whole of community is already doomed. Therefore, cigrattes should be banned from the very core.

In conclusion, I believe that smoking cause serious health concerns and should be banned from our country and the rest of the world so that we can have a clean environment for our future generation. Government should definitely get involved and take this into account so that further trades can be blocked.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I completely agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, including smoking-related illness, young people’s access to cigarettes, and the influence of the tobacco trade, with an example referring to Pakistan. This addresses the task, but the support is uneven: the claim about rising cancer diagnoses is attributed to a news source without explaining the link or giving detail, while the assertion that a community is “already doomed” is too sweeping to persuade. The response also focuses mainly on banning cigarette sales; explain more directly why the health risks justify making smoking illegal and how a ban could work. More precise development of these points would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “As a result,” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas. However, progression within the body paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and some links do not make the reasoning fully clear. For example, the move from teenagers’ access to cigarettes to the claim that the outcome is life-threatening needs a more explicit explanation. The second paragraph shifts from the cigarette trade to government action and then to a community being “doomed,” without developing the connections. Use clearer topic sentences and explain each step in the argument; this would make the organisation more consistently logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “diagnosed with cancer,” “addicted,” “trade,” and “future generation,” so your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at stronger expressions, such as “life-threatening” and “strict action.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “serious health concern” would be more natural as “serious health concerns,” and “banned from everywhere” is vague. Spelling errors such as “threatning” and “cigrattes” are noticeable, while “the whole of community” is not idiomatic. Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than dramatic wording, and proofread spelling and word forms to improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a result clause in “As a result, they get addicted to smoking” and a conditional example beginning “if a teenager…”. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “One of the main reason” needs plural agreement, and “health problems that occurs” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “Cancer being one of the most life threatening problem,” the sentence is incomplete and “problem” should be plural. There are also errors in “teenagers finds” and “smoking cause.” Work on agreement, complete sentence construction, and articles/plurals, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. More accurate control of these forms would strengthen your varied sentence attempts.
