IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.
To what extent do you agree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Smoking is one of the most significant public health concern in the modern world. Since tobacco consuming is responsible for a wide range of serious illnesses, some people argue that smoking should be prohibited by law. I strongly agree with the view, although i believe that such a ban should be introduced gradually and accompanied by effective support for smokers.
The primary reason for making smoking illegal is the health issue of every public. It is mostly concerned with the health issues related to lungs, heart and kidney. And most importantly, it is clearly seen that the young ones consumes it more than old peoples.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You state a clear position—“I strongly agree”—and identify public health as a relevant reason, so the response is connected to the question. However, the task is addressed only minimally: the health effects are listed briefly, with no explanation of how they support making smoking illegal, and the point about young people is not developed or supported with an example. The response also does not consider the implications of prohibition or explain your view that a ban should be gradual and include support for smokers. The required minimum of 250 words is not met; at 105 words, there is too little material to develop the argument. Extend each main idea with explanation and a relevant example, and address the question more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction gives your position, followed by a paragraph presenting a reason. Linking expressions such as “Since” and “And most importantly” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is limited, and the second paragraph moves from general health effects to young people without explaining the relationship between these points. The sentence beginning “And most importantly” is also an awkward way to start a new sentence, while “It is mostly concerned with” has an unclear reference. Develop a clear sequence—for example, claim, explanation, and example—and use paragraphing to separate distinct reasons or address a counterargument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “public health,” “prohibited by law,” and “serious illnesses,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “accompanied by effective support.” However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, including “public health concern” and “tobacco consuming”; these reduce precision. “Health issue of every public” is also unclear, and the repeated use of “health issues” limits variety. Choose established collocations and more precise terms, such as “a public health concern,” “tobacco use,” and “the health of the general public.” Building a wider range of accurate vocabulary for causes, consequences, and policy would strengthen the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both a complex opening sentence with “Since” and a longer sentence using “although,” alongside simpler statements. The main position is understandable, and some sentence structures are controlled. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction remain: “one of the most significant public health concern” needs a plural noun, and “the young ones consumes” has a subject–verb agreement error. “And most importantly” creates a sentence fragment-like connection to the preceding point, while “i” should be capitalised. The range is limited in this short response, so aim to use a mix of accurate simple and complex sentences. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries when revising.
