IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is true that smoking is injurious to health and can cause serious health related diseases and should be made illegal. I strongly agree with this statement because smoking cause serious health issues such as lung cancer and shortness of breath.

To commence with, smoking destroys the good cells of body, which helps in breathing. As a result it damage the lungs of the individuals. If people smoke on regular basis as a form of pleasure, they are more prone to have lung cancer and other related diseases associated with it. Studies have shown that 90 percent of population are dying because of smoking.

Moreover, the manufacturing and production of smoke products should made illegal. Although government has banned these products in markets, people often sell them in illegal way. However, government should implement a heavy fine to pay by the shopkeeper who sell them so, that people stop selling them completely. For example, in many developed countries, government have already assigned special team who regularly inspect the markets and warehouse to make sure that no one selling and buying. In addition to this, hospitals are also playing crucial role in this campaign by examining the diagnosis report of patients about why this disease has arise.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with the statement that smoking can cause major life threatning conditions and it should be made illegal because it is destroying our health and government should implement strict laws against against it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly agree that smoking should be illegal. You give relevant reasons, including the risks of lung cancer and the need to restrict the sale of tobacco products, and you add an example about inspections in developed countries. However, the response is 7 words below the required minimum, and some points are not fully developed. For instance, the claim that 90 percent of the population die because of smoking is very broad and unsupported; clarify who this figure refers to or use a more cautious, credible example. The role of hospitals is also introduced but not clearly connected to making smoking illegal. Develop these ideas and explain more directly why prohibition is preferable to regulation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from health effects to government action is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and a few connections are unclear. For example, the sentence about hospitals examining patients’ reports follows the discussion of market inspections, but its relevance to the argument is not explained. The phrase “However” also does not clearly signal a contrast with the preceding point. To strengthen progression, group related ideas more tightly and use linking expressions only when their logical relationship is clear. Clearer references to what “these products” means would also help.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including “lung cancer,” “manufacturing and production,” “illegal,” and “implement a heavy fine.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “playing crucial role.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “health related diseases,” “destroying the good cells of body,” and “life threatning conditions” could be expressed more naturally. “Smoke products” is also unclear; “tobacco products” is more precise. Spelling errors such as “threatning” and repetition in “against against it” further reduce control. Build a bank of accurate topic collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If people smoke on regular basis… they are more prone…” and a relative clause in “cells of body, which helps in breathing.” The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “smoking cause,” “it damage,” “should made illegal,” and “government have already assigned.” The clause about cells also has an unclear grammatical reference: “which helps” does not agree clearly with “cells.” Some sentences are long and combine several ideas, making their structure harder to control. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and complete verb forms, and divide sentences when the relationship between clauses is unclear.
