Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely reported that the number of diseases caused by smoking is increasing in number and severity. It is widely believed that smoking is the cause for more severe illnesses and should be banned by the law. I strongly agree with this stance as many diseases can be pevented by the stopping the commercial selling and production of this drug.

Firstly, habbit of smoking can be easily eradicated through various therapies and counsellings. As many people are adopting it merely for the sak of its easy availability, thus the law should ban its production and selling. Smoking is the most widely and commercially sold drug that is harming the human body in more severe ways than any other drug. In 2023, a report issued by the general council for human health suggested that the hughest contributor of mouth cancer is cigarrette smoke, and more then 70% of the cases are attributed to it. Therefore, measures should be taken to reduce its consumption and prevent its addiction as soon as possible.

Secondly, the cigrratte smoke is not only easily available commercially it is widely accepted in the sociey as well. This practice not only affect the surrounding enviroment but also effect the surrounding people turning them into passive smokers. Thus, the health risks are not only confined to the smokers but to the surrounding people that are breathing the same air. For instance, In many third- world countries most infant deaths were reported due to a family member in the vicinity being a chain smoker. Thus, deducing that a smokers effect all the people in the vacinity is not a overstatement, and soceity as whle should try to outlaw the habbit of smoking and the smoker.

In conclusion, smoking causes serious illnesses not only in the smoker but the passive smokers as well , thus it should be banned by the governmenet and made illegal. I beleive that the commercial availability of cigarrettes is the number one reason for the constant increase in the number of smokers and eventual addiction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly support making smoking illegal. Both body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including the health risks of smoking and the harm to passive smokers, and you attempt to support these with examples such as the cancer statistic and infant deaths. This addresses the task and provides a developed argument. However, some support is asserted rather than explained: the claim about infant deaths in “many third-world countries,” for example, is broad and would be more convincing with a clearer source or explanation. You could also distinguish more carefully between banning commercial sales and outlawing smokers themselves, since these are different policy measures. More precise qualification would strengthen the development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two reason-based body paragraphs and a conclusion. “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the second paragraph logically extends the argument from smokers’ health to the effects on others. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, linking can feel mechanical, particularly through repeated “Thus” and “Therefore,” and the first body paragraph’s move from therapies to banning production is not fully explained. Some references, such as “this practice” and “it,” could be made more precise. Use a wider range of transitions and make the relationship between each claim and its evidence explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “commercial availability,” “passive smokers,” “consumption,” and “addiction,” which helps communicate the main argument. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “pevented,” “habb it,” “cigrratte,” and “vac inity.” Some combinations are also unnatural: “cause for more severe illnesses,” “adopting it,” and “the stopping the commercial selling” do not express the intended ideas idiomatically. Repetition of “smoking,” “smoke,” and “surrounding” further limits flexibility. Build accuracy with common collocations for health and policy, and proofread spelling carefully; these changes would make the argument easier to read and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “as,” “that,” and “not only…but also,” so there is some structural variety. The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors occur across sentence patterns and sometimes make relationships unclear. For example, “habbit of smoking can be easily eradicated” is missing a determiner, while “This practice not only affect…the surrounding people” has subject–verb agreement problems. The construction “Thus, deducing that…is not a overstatement” is also awkwardly formed, and punctuation around the conclusion’s “as well” is inconsistent. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and parallel structures, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. Greater control of these patterns would improve readability.
