Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You take a clear position in favour of making smoking illegal, especially in the opening and conclusion, and give relevant reasons: smoking causes serious illness, creates healthcare costs, and can affect young people. This addresses the question and includes more than one supporting point. However, some ideas are less fully explained than others. The health argument names lung cancer and heart disease, but the explanation of how prohibition would reduce smoking needs more detail. The paragraph about government tax and public spending is difficult to follow, and its connection to the case for a ban is not made clear. Develop each reason with a specific explanation or example, and clarify how the financial argument supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, so the reader can identify its broad structure and your position. The first body paragraph focuses on health, while the next introduces financial and social concerns. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear: the discussion moves from tax revenue to healthcare costs, public transport, personal savings and students without showing how these points connect. Linking phrases such as “To begin with” and “In conclusion” help signal stages, but “In the additional” is not an effective transition, and repeated references to “smoking” and “money” do not establish clear relationships between ideas. Group related points together and use precise transitions and referencing to guide the reader through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “primary cause,” “public health,” “financial burden” and “healthcare,” and these choices help communicate your main concerns. However, the range is limited and many spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the response difficult to understand, such as “life therating,” “morden socity” and “behind every year.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, including “an money maker for government tax” and “spend money on the proper way.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. Reusing a smaller set of clear terms is more effective than attempting phrases whose meaning is uncertain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You use some simple sentences and attempt longer structures, for example, “If the government made smoking illegal it would significantly protect public health,” which shows an effort to express a conditional relationship. However, sentence structures are often incomplete or inaccurately formed, and errors can make meaning hard to follow. Examples include “Medical research has found that in smoke they made from tobacco,” which lacks a complete, clear clause, and “when we smoke the directy go inside to yours lungs,” where the subject, verb and possessive structure are not controlled. Agreement and articles also need attention, as in “15 years student are smoking.” Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, then check agreement, articles and punctuation.
