Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that smoking should be prohibited, and you give relevant reasons concerning health and the effects of smoke on non-smokers. The examples about lung disease and second-hand smoke help explain these points. However, the response does not fully address the scope of the question: it focuses mainly on smoking in public places, while the prompt asks whether smoking itself should be made illegal. The claim that smoking harms the environment and the comment about personality are less clearly explained, and the survey and research examples would be more convincing with clearer detail or explanation. Clarify whether you support a complete ban or restrictions in public areas, then develop each reason with a specific explanation and relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The health effects are grouped together, followed by the impact on non-smokers, so the reader can follow the broad direction of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the point about sleep appears without being connected to the preceding discussion, and the final claim about personality does not clearly support the main argument. Linking phrases such as “Another effect” and “For instance” are used, but some connections feel mechanical or do not show the relationship between ideas precisely. Use clearer topic sentences, explain how each example supports its point, and remove or develop ideas that do not advance the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “lung diseases,” “lung cancer,” “air pollution” and “respiratory issue,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “effect,” “harmful” and “another.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “asthma,” “environment,” “illegal” and “non-smoking,” as well as unnatural combinations like “bad aspect of personality” and “smoking person.” These sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Build a more precise set of expressions for health risks and public policy, and check spelling and collocations. For example, “second-hand smoke” is more natural and specific than “smoke” when describing harm to non-smokers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences using clauses such as “because” and “when,” so there is some variety in sentence structure. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur throughout. Examples include “smoking should be consider illegal,” “it cause illness,” “it are harmful,” and “smoking are should be consider ban.” Some sentences also have unclear or incomplete structures, as in “one drawback is it are harmful for our body,” while punctuation and sentence boundaries are not always controlled. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, then build longer sentences from a correct main clause. Proofreading each sentence for its subject, verb and article use would improve clarity.
