Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people argue that the smoking is root cause of serious diseases and it should be banned. I completely agree with this opinion because it not only leads to health issues to the smokers but also harm the people around them.

Nowadays, a huge number of people are addicted to smoking and risking their lives. Smoking is the primary cause of lungs cancer, a disease with no suitable cure at present. Besides that, it also pave the way for other health issues such as breathing problem, cough, and liver infection. For example, in pakistan, the majority of the cases related to liver failure are reported in those who have been smoking throughout their lives. As a result, the chances of sudden death are increased in such individuals. Therefore, necessary measures should be taken to reduce the lives loses due to that habit.

Furthermore, smoking is way too dangerous for the people around smoker because the smoker himself is inhaling the filtered smoke while the person sitting next to him is exposed to unfiltered smoke. This term is known as "passive smoking" in which an individual doesn't smoke but inhale it through breathing. Therefore, the detrimental affects are also a trouble for general public. Additionally, it can have serious consequences on the children. Many kids might see someone puffing and wish to try it out. For instance, there is a higher possibility that a children might become a smoker after seeing his father or mother smoke during his teenage. Consequently, its effects are not limited to one person.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with this view point that smoking should be made illegal because it acts as primary reason behind dangerous and uncurable and its detrimental effects on society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that smoking should be illegal, and you give relevant reasons involving smokers’ health, passive smoking, and children’s exposure. The examples about liver failure and children imitating parents help extend the discussion. This fits a response that addresses the task and supports its main ideas. However, some claims are broad or insufficiently explained—for example, the assertion that most liver-failure cases in Pakistan involve smokers is presented without support, and the link between smoking and liver infection is not clarified. Develop these points with more precise evidence or explanation, and explain briefly why prohibition is preferable to other measures such as restrictions or public-health campaigns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The paragraph about passive smoking also moves from harm to bystanders to possible effects on children. At times, however, linking phrases are repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Therefore” and “Consequently.” Some references are also unclear, as in “its effects,” where the reader must infer whether “its” refers to smoking or passive smoking. Use a wider range of transitions and make references more explicit to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “passive smoking,” “detrimental effects,” “exposed,” and “consequences,” which allows you to discuss health and social impacts. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “necessary measures should be taken.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “root cause” for smoking’s role, “lungs cancer,” “liver infection,” and “lives loses.” “Uncurable” is also not the appropriate form in this context. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they reduce precision. Focus on accurate health-related collocations and check spelling and word forms when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “after,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, however. For example, “it not only leads” needs an auxiliary (“it does not only lead” or “it not only leads” with a matching structure), while “it also pave” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. In “an individual doesn’t smoke but inhale it,” the verb form should agree with the subject, and “a children” has a number mismatch. There are also article and punctuation problems, such as “the smoking” and the missing space after “individuals.” Review agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
