Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You give a clear, though contradictory, response: you say you agree that smoking causes serious illness, but disagree that it should be illegal. The discussion of second-hand smoke affecting children and your friend’s illness is relevant, and the conclusion repeats your concern about health. However, the reasons are only minimally developed, and the paragraph about selling cigarettes and other substances does not explain whether prohibition would be effective or why smoking should remain legal. The response also contains only 205 words; the 10 words copied from the prompt are excluded, so it is 45 words below the required minimum. Develop your position consistently and add specific explanation and support for each main reason.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a basic essay shape, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, ideas within paragraphs are not arranged clearly: the first body paragraph moves from smoking in public to children, diseases, and a personal example without explaining the links between them. The second paragraph introduces sales and illegal activity but does not connect this point clearly to your position. Repeated references to “this generation” and “many cases” also make progression difficult to follow. Organise each paragraph around one reason, then explain and illustrate it in a clear sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
You use a small set of relevant topic words, including “smoking,” “cigarette,” “children,” “cancer,” and “heart attack,” so the general subject is identifiable. However, vocabulary is basic and highly repetitive, and frequent spelling errors and inaccurate word choices strain the reader. Examples include “denjrus,” “sigrate,” and “gaja”; phrases such as “high score with cancer” and “negative effect” are also unclear or imprecise. Build a more accurate range for discussing health and policy, and check spelling carefully. For example, use “serious health risks,” “second-hand smoke,” and “restrict the sale of tobacco” where these match your intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
You attempt a few longer sentences and use basic linking structures, but sentence forms are very limited and grammatical errors are frequent enough to distort meaning. For example, “Some people think is its smoking can cause…” has an unclear clause structure, while “many humans are smoke” and “my freind are a cancer” show problems with verb forms and agreement. Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries are also often inaccurate, as in “with childrens near.” These errors make several ideas difficult to interpret. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses such as “because” and “although.” Check subject–verb agreement and use a full stop when one idea is complete.
