Student answer (Band 6.5)

Smoking undoubtedly causes serious harm to mental and physical well-being. Therefore, I believe it should be made illegal and government should make regulations against people who smoke.

On the one hand side, many individulas claim that smoking is a personal matter and people should be given freedom of action. But what they do not realise is that smoking causes threats to other individulas' health as well, and passive smoking is as dangerous as active smoking. So, any individual who does not smoke will be harmed in the same way when a smoker smokes in a public place. Therefore, it is mandatory to ensure that government have proper rules and regulations against those who smoke freely in public. Another way to stop people from smoking is to impose fines that will restrict individuals from smoking.

Additionally, it is crucial to spread awareness and let people know what damage are they causing to their bodies. A person who smokes regularly is at high risk of developing mouth cancer and liver cancer. Despite the fact that many cigarette companies clearly label these risks at the packaging people still are unable to refrain themselves from tabacoo. These health risks puts pressure on healthcare system. Moreover, smoking also causes stress and restlessness as active smokers become habitual and if they do not get their daily dose they would experience anxiety. This habit of constant craving creates a loop which becomes unavoidable with the passge of time as it provides instant dopamine.

To avoid the above circumstances, government should consider imposing taxes on tabacoo companies and also on companies that are selling flavoured vapes filled with toxins. Government should allocate funding for rehabilitation centers and public campaigns to spread awareness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you support making smoking illegal, and you address health risks, effects on others, and possible government measures. The discussion of passive smoking and public-place restrictions gives relevant support, while the points about healthcare costs and dependence extend the argument. This fits a response that addresses the task and develops its ideas, although some claims are broad or not fully explained. For example, you mention mouth and liver cancer without showing how these examples support a complete ban rather than regulation, and the final suggestions on taxes, rehabilitation and campaigns are listed more than evaluated. To strengthen the response, explain why prohibition is preferable to less restrictive policies and develop one or two examples in greater depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a generally coherent arrangement: it introduces your view, develops harms and restrictions, then concludes with further government actions. Linking expressions such as “On the one hand,” “Additionally,” and “Moreover” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the opening phrase “On the one hand side” is awkward; the paragraph also moves from passive smoking to fines without a clear explanation of how the points relate. The final paragraph introduces several proposals but does not clearly connect them to the earlier case for making smoking illegal. Referencing is mostly understandable, though “these health risks” could refer to several preceding points. More deliberate paragraph focus and clearer links between claims and consequences would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “passive smoking,” “healthcare system,” “rehabilitation centers,” and “public campaigns.” There are also attempts at less common expressions such as “instant dopamine” and “constant craving,” though some choices are imprecise or unnatural. Spelling errors in “individulas,” “tabacoo,” and “passge” are noticeable, and phrases such as “freedom of action,” “daily dose,” and “filled with toxins” could be expressed more precisely in this formal argument. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your position, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully, especially in key topic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional sentence (“if they do not get their daily dose they would experience anxiety”) and a relative clause (“which becomes unavoidable with the passge of time”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “government should make regulations” needs an article or plural form, “government have proper rules” has subject–verb agreement trouble, and “what damage are they causing” has incorrect word order in an indirect question. In “These health risks puts pressure,” the plural subject requires a plural verb. Review articles, agreement, and embedded-question structure, and proofread punctuation around longer sentences to improve control.
