Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the contemporary world, smoking has become a major public health concern because it can cause several serious illness. Some people belive that smoking should be made illegal to protect public health. I strongly agree with this view because smoking causes life threatening diseases and negativley affect the health of non-smokers.
To begin with, smoking is one of the major causes of various health problrms, including lung cancer, heart diseases and respiratory disorders. The harmful chemicals present in cigarettes can damage the lung and other organs. Consequantly , people who smoke regularly are more likely to develope serious illness and may require expensive medical treatments. For example, many smokers suffer from breathing difficulties , which can affect their daily activities and overall quality of life. Therefor, banning smoking could encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
Furthermore, smoking does not only affect smokers but also harm people around them. This is known as passive smoking, which occures when non-smokers breath in smoke produced by cigerettes .Chidren and elderly people are purticularly vulnerable to the harmfull effect of tobacco smoke. For instance, children who are freequently exposed to cigerette smoke may develope respiratory problems. Making smoking illegal could protect innocent people from these health risks and safer environement for everyone .
In conclusion, I strongly agree that smoking could be restriced because it causes serious illness and endangers the health of others. Neverthless , governments should combine strict regulations with public awareness campaigns and supports for smokers to achive better results.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear throughout: you strongly support making smoking illegal, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—serious illness among smokers and harm to people exposed to second-hand smoke. The examples of breathing difficulties and children developing respiratory problems help explain these points, while the conclusion restates your view and adds regulation, awareness campaigns and support for smokers. This addresses the task and provides a developed, relevant response. To strengthen the discussion further, explain more precisely how a legal ban would reduce smoking, or acknowledge a practical consideration such as enforcement or personal freedom. Some claims, such as banning smoking encouraging healthier lifestyles, are asserted rather than fully explained, so a little more specific development would make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion summarises your position. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the relevant claims. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical because paragraphs rely heavily on formulaic transitions, and some links between claims could be made more explicit. For example, the move from the health effects of smoking to the claim that a ban would reduce healthcare costs needs a clearer explanation. Review punctuation around sentence boundaries and spaces as well, since these affect the smooth presentation of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “public health concern,” “respiratory disorders,” “passive smoking,” and “healthcare systems,” which allows you to discuss the issue clearly. There is some attempt to use less common language, but accuracy and natural collocation are inconsistent, limiting the precision of the vocabulary. Examples include “serious illness” where a plural is needed, “harmfull effect,” and “safer environement”; spelling errors also occur in words such as “Consequantly” and “cigerettes.” Phrases such as “supports for smokers” and “smoking could be restriced” are understandable but not fully natural or precise. Build a reliable range of topic collocations and proofread spelling and word forms so that errors do not distract from your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because it can cause…”) and a relative clause (“which can affect their daily activities”). Most ideas remain understandable, and the sentence structures are varied enough to support the argument. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and verb forms: “smoking … harm people” should be “harms people,” and “non-smokers breath in smoke” needs “breathe.” There are also article, number and sentence-boundary issues, as in “damage the lung and other organs” and the run-together punctuation in “disorders. The harmful chemicals.” These errors rarely prevent understanding, but careful editing of agreement, articles, plurals and punctuation would improve control.
