Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that smoking should be illegal, while it is true that smoking can cause serious illnesses, I firmly agree with the view that smoking should be illegal due to several compelling reasons. This essay will not only elaborate my viewpoint but also provide the relevent example to support it.
To commence with, one of the most significant reason is that smoking can cause serious issues in the liver. This can attributed to the fact that one person have only liver as an organ in our body and if the liver gets demage it can cause several issues. In other words, smaking can lead to death. For instance, if a person is consuming tobacoo daily in the form of smoking, the smoke that gets inside the body starts to cause dysfunction of the liver. This clearly demonstarates that smoking is not beneficial for the health.
Moreover, another crucial factor to consider is that due to smoking on one person is not getting effected by it but also the people who are surrounded by the person during smoking. Furthermore, the person who smokes in public places for example, on bus stops, stations or in other public places, the individuals around then also inhale the smoke they spread. Consequently, the non-smoking individuals are in interaction with tobacoo indirectly. Thus it is evident that smoking is injurious to the health even for the person who smokes as well as for the people around them.
In conclusion, some may argue that its a personal choice or that the surrounded people should maintain distance, I strongly believe that smoking is not good for health for anyone because of the reasons discussed above. Therfore, smoking should be banned by the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you firmly support making smoking illegal, and you give relevant reasons concerning harm to smokers and exposure to others. The discussion of second-hand smoke, including people at bus stops and stations, addresses an important consequence of smoking. However, the claim that smoking causes serious liver problems is not clearly explained or supported, and the example about tobacco smoke causing liver dysfunction is medically questionable. The point about protecting others is more persuasive, but it would benefit from a specific, reliable example and fuller explanation. You address the task, though some ideas are less fully developed than others; strengthen the reasoning and evidence behind each main point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from harm to the smoker to harm to people nearby, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help readers follow this sequence. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Furthermore,” “Consequently” and “Thus” to introduce closely related points. The opening sentence also joins contrasting ideas with a comma, making the relationship between them less clear. In the second body paragraph, references such as “then” and “they” are not always precise. Use fewer, more natural transitions and make each paragraph’s central point and supporting explanation connect more directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “serious illnesses,” “public places,” “inhale the smoke” and “personal choice,” which makes your position understandable. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices, collocations and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “serious issues in the liver,” “one person is not getting effected,” and “in interaction with tobacoo indirectly.” There are also repeated references to “smoking” and “health,” where more precise terms could help distinguish the effects on smokers and bystanders. Check spelling carefully, especially “relevant,” “damage,” “demonstrates” and “therefore,” and choose natural collocations. More accurate topic vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “if” and “because,” and your meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in sentence construction and agreement occur in several places. For example, “one of the most significant reason is” has a number-agreement problem, while “This can attributed” is missing an auxiliary verb. The sentence beginning “Moreover, another crucial factor…” is awkwardly constructed, and “the individuals around then also inhale” contains unclear reference and sentence-level control issues. The opening sentence also uses a comma where a full stop or conjunction is needed between independent clauses. Review subject–verb agreement, auxiliary verbs and sentence boundaries, then proofread complex sentences to ensure their clauses are complete and clearly connected.
