IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking is injurious to health and it is the root cause of several life threatening chronic disorders. It should be banned I absolutely agree with this.

Smoking is considered detrimental because it causes more harm and no good. Cigarettes contain harmful carcinogens which are cancer causing agents and play a key role in cause of lung cancer known as carcinoma. According to various research's it is evident on the basis of facts concluded from them that cigarettes contain most deadly carcinogens. Which not only contributes in deteriorating health but also has effect of environment and non smokers.

Firstly I would like to discuss the effects of smoking on environment smoking cause air pollution. It adds harmful pollutants into the air declining the purity of air and decreasing the pH resulting in acid content in air which inturn can cause acid rain.

To minimize all these effects of smoking government should ban smoking because it has nothing to do good with people or contributing economy. First initiative that government has to take is seal all the factories and godowns operating illegal because it's the major source of cigarette and tobacco supply as most of them are produced I these illegal places. But baning or making them illegal is not the only solution government should start an awareness program in increasing the awareness about harm if smoking to common people who are just smoking under influence. Government should make rehabilitation centres accessible for people and at the end should impose heavy fine on people who are caught smoking or supplying.

In conclusion I strongly agree that smoking has adverse effect on health, environment and economy and baning it is one of the most crucial steps to protect our young generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening—“I absolutely agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the health effects of smoking and propose government action, including restrictions on supply, awareness programmes, rehabilitation and fines. This covers the task and includes relevant ideas. However, the response focuses more on listing harms and measures than on explaining why making smoking illegal is justified or how a ban would work. The environmental point, especially the claim about air pH and acid rain, is not clearly supported, and the economic impact is mentioned only briefly. To strengthen the response, develop fewer points with specific reasoning or examples, and distinguish a complete ban from regulation and support for smokers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall structure: an introduction, discussion of harms, proposed actions and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument, and the main position is easy to follow. However, paragraphing and progression are not consistently controlled. The second paragraph combines health and environmental effects, while the next begins by revisiting the environment; the transition to government measures is abrupt. Some linking is mechanical, and the long sentence beginning “First initiative that government has to take” contains several proposals without clear separation. Group related ideas into focused paragraphs and use clearer links to show how each reason supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “carcinogens,” “chronic disorders,” “air pollution” and “rehabilitation centres,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “root cause” for a range of illnesses, “contributing economy,” and “awareness about harm if smoking.” Spelling and word-form errors—including “baning,” “research's” and “inturn”—also reduce precision. Aim for natural, accurate combinations rather than adding technical terms where their meaning is uncertain. Proofreading and learning common collocations for health, policy and public awareness would make the vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “carcinogens which are cancer causing agents” and a conditional idea about the effects of pollution. However, control is uneven, and errors in sentence boundaries, agreement and clause construction sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “It should be banned I absolutely agree with this” joins two independent clauses without punctuation, while “According to various research's…” is followed by an incomplete sentence beginning “Which not only…”. In “smoking cause air pollution,” the subject and verb do not agree. Practise separating complete clauses, checking subject–verb agreement and using subordinate clauses accurately; this will help you express complex ideas more clearly.
