Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the 21st century, the adults and mostly the teenageers (often called as Genzees) are smoking very frequently. In the past few years the numbers have increased significantly although the self awareness teams and NGO's have conducted multiple initiatives and survey to spread awarness among the population.

The consumption of smoke is very dangerous for health as it causes various diseases and reduces the strength of the human body. The continuous consumption of cigarettes affects the lungs which makes it difficult for the being to take breathe and to live daily routine.

Cigarettes produces the smoke which not only affects the person who is smoking but it also affects the surrounding due to the exhaled smoke. The people standing nearby the smoker also inhales the affected and pollute air which affects their lungs without the consumption of cigarettes.

The people do smoking at various places tea stalls, cafes, hotels and even while driving publicly. This also even affects children very badly as their body doesn't have much immunity to fight with the germs and bacterias of the smoke.

Additionally the females are also smoking the cigarettes which is not good for their future life as this would cause multiple hormonal imbalances in the body.

The government must take appropriate and strict actions for the consumption of smoke. The manufacturing and transport of cigarettes must be completely banned in all the states of India. Additionally, the various awareness camps should be orgainised to spread the awareness. The learning schools must be setup for supporting those who are addicted to smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the health risks of smoking and make a clear recommendation that cigarette production and transport should be banned. The points about harm to smokers, passive smoking, children, and government action are relevant to the topic. However, the question asks specifically how far you agree that smoking should be illegal, and your position is not fully explained: you do not distinguish between banning smoking itself and restricting the sale or manufacture of cigarettes. Some claims, such as the effects on women’s future hormonal health, are introduced without explanation or support. To strengthen the response, state your degree of agreement directly in the introduction and develop a few key reasons with clearer explanations or examples, including consideration of how a ban could be enforced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable progression from the prevalence of smoking, to its health effects, and finally to proposed government action. Paragraph breaks help separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “The government must” signal movement between ideas. However, most points are presented as a sequence rather than developed into a connected argument. The opening reference to rising numbers is not clearly linked to the later case for making smoking illegal, and the final recommendations combine a ban, awareness camps, and support for addiction without explaining how these measures relate. Some transitions are mechanical, while the long list of public places interrupts the flow. Group related points and use clearer cause-and-effect links to create stronger progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “lungs,” “exhaled smoke,” “hormonal imbalances,” “manufacturing,” and “awareness camps,” so the reader can understand the main subject. However, the range is limited by repeated or imprecise expressions such as “consumption of smoke,” “do smoking,” and “spread the awareness.” Several spelling errors, including “teenageers,” “awarness,” and “orgainised,” also reduce accuracy. Some word combinations are unnatural, for example “take breathe” and “affected and pollute air,” and “Genzees” is an unsuitable informal label in this essay. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling; this will make your ideas clearer and more appropriate for an academic response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “Cigarettes produces the smoke which not only affects…” and a conditional structure in “as this would cause…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “Cigarettes produces” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the people…also inhales” uses the wrong verb form. The sentence beginning “The people do smoking…” is also grammatically awkward, and punctuation is missing after “publicly.” Work on accurate present-tense forms, plural subjects, and sentence boundaries. Building a few well-controlled complex sentences will improve range without sacrificing clarity.
