Student answer (Band 6.0)
Smoking is really dangerous for everyone so I strongly agree with the statement that it should be made illegal. Smoking causes various kinds of illnesses in adults as well as children. It not only effect the person who is smoking but also everyone around him.
Tobacco used in making cigarettes contains at least 48 kinds of carcinogens which effects human body in numerous ways. Smoking also contribute to pollution. The smoke released during smoking is really toxic and causes various respiratory diseases. It also is the main factor in causing lungs cancer. Some people infuse it with various drugs including heroin, marijuana, ice etc. Because of inclusion of other drugs in cigarettes it has caused a drug epidemic in regions like Punjab in Pakistan and India.
It is also effecting children that has never smoked in their lives. Smokeing near a child causes his airways to be effected and his breathing becomes difficult which may result into asthma cardiac arrest or other such diseases. It should not be allowed in public places for the health of elderly and babies especially.
An example of smoking that I can tell is from my own personal Life. My father was a chain smoker and smoking had effected his lungs really badly. He was admitted in the hospital for a brief period of time. After that experience he quit smoking.
From my experience of visiting hospitals I have came to the conclusion that smoking should be illegal. If it is difficult to declare it it illegal at least it should not be allowed in public areas like hospitals offices and near schools.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly agree that smoking should be illegal, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You address several relevant reasons, including harm to smokers, second-hand smoke, effects on children, and your father’s experience. This gives the response a solid, relevant basis. To make the argument more fully developed, explain more directly why the health risks justify a complete ban rather than regulation, and distinguish the case for banning smoking in public places from making smoking illegal everywhere. The claims about drugs being mixed into cigarettes and a regional drug epidemic are not clearly connected or supported, so they weaken an otherwise relevant argument. The response covers the task, but some points need clearer explanation and support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, paragraphs on health effects and children, a personal example, and a concluding recommendation. This overall arrangement makes the main position easy to follow. You also use basic linking expressions such as “It not only,” “also,” “Because of,” and “After that experience” to show relationships between ideas. However, several paragraphs read as lists of claims rather than developing one central point, and the shift from smoking-related illness to drugs is abrupt. The conclusion also moves from calling for smoking to be illegal to proposing restrictions in public areas without explaining the distinction. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to your argument; vary linking devices so the progression feels less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “carcinogens,” “respiratory diseases,” “chain smoker,” and “public places.” These terms show an attempt to discuss health effects with some specificity. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision, for example “Smokeing,” “effecting,” and “lungs cancer.” Some phrases are also awkward or imprecise, such as “infuse it with various drugs” and “the main factor in causing.” Aim to learn accurate collocations and check spelling carefully, especially for repeated key terms. More precise wording would help distinguish established health effects from claims that need qualification, while retaining the relevant vocabulary you already use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “It not only … but also …” and the clause beginning “Because of inclusion of other drugs…”. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “It not only effect” needs subject–verb agreement and the correct verb form, while “Smoking also contribute” should agree with the singular subject. In “children that has never smoked,” the relative clause has an agreement error, and “I have came” uses an incorrect past participle. There are also problems with articles and sentence punctuation, such as the list of illnesses lacking clear punctuation. Practise checking agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, while building more accurate complex sentences.
