Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that smoking should be made illegal because it's injurious to people health. Although smoking for ocaisonally for fun make people look cool, it has serious health concerns. I completely agree with the statement that smoking should be made illegal because it can cause health problems such as cancer and also financial problems.

To begin with, smoking can cause serious helath problems such as lung cancer, heart problems that can cause a person's death as well. Tobacco in ciggarets contain dangerous chemicals such as nicotine, caffine and it release CO2 when exhale. Moreover, it can cause damage to people closer to you as well. For instance, my uncle had to transplant his kidney due to addiction of smoking. Hence, smoking is harmful to health and it should be banned.

In addition, another major reason to make smoking illegal is that it cause financial issue for smokers. Ciggerates, Cigars and other smoking material are expensive and people from low income families often spend much of their income to buy these smoking material. For exampale, my friend work as a security guard and his salary is only 30,000 pakistani rupee and he spend around 5000 rupee to buy ciggarates for whole month . Then at the end of month he often borrow money from me. Therefore, smoking should be made illegal to protect people from financial crisis as well.

In conclusion, smoking can serious social, helath and financial problems. Health problems such as cancer and cardiac arrest can occur due to smoking and addiction can also lead to financial worries. In ny opinion these reasons are enough to ban smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: “I completely agree,” and the conclusion maintains that view. You address the prompt with two relevant reasons—health risks and financial pressure—and support them with examples, including your uncle and your friend’s spending. This gives the response a clear, task-focused argument. To strengthen it further, develop the reasoning behind the examples and connect them more explicitly to why prohibition is preferable to measures such as education or restrictions. Some claims are also broad: the uncle’s kidney transplant is attributed to smoking without explaining the medical link, and the discussion could distinguish direct health effects from second-hand smoke. More precise support and fuller consideration of the policy question would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for health and financial arguments, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help identify each stage. Examples are placed alongside the points they support, which also aids clarity. Some linking is rather formulaic, however, and repeated conclusions such as “Hence” and “Therefore” make the connections feel mechanical. Within paragraphs, explain more clearly how each example proves the case for making smoking illegal, rather than only showing that smoking can be harmful or costly. More varied transitions and clearer links between claims and evidence would make the organisation more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “lung cancer,” “nicotine,” “low income families,” and “financial crisis.” However, the range and control are limited, with repeated use of “smoking,” “problems,” and “cause,” and several inaccurate or unnatural choices that sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “injurious to people health,” “smoking material,” and “financial issue.” Spelling errors such as “ciggarets,” “caffine,” and “exampale” are also noticeable. Aim to learn accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise terms for health effects and household spending would help express your points clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a concession beginning “Although” and a relative clause in “heart problems that can cause a person's death.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors recur in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “Although smoking for ocaisonally for fun make people look cool” is not a complete, well-formed clause, while “it cause financial issue” and “he spend” have subject–verb agreement errors. The sentence beginning “Tobacco in ciggarets contain…” also has problems with agreement and sentence boundaries. Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them using conjunctions; proofreading for agreement and punctuation will improve control.
