Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree to a large extent that smoking causes serious illness and should be banned. You address both parts of the question, giving health effects—including harm to passive smokers—and reasons for prohibition, such as fire risk and pollution. These are relevant ideas, but some are less fully developed than others. The health paragraph explains how smoke affects smokers and non-smokers, while the fire-safety point would benefit from a clearer explanation of how making smoking illegal would reduce fires. The examples about George Harrison and a Washington industrial fire are asserted rather than explained or supported, which limits their persuasive value. Develop each main reason with a precise explanation and a credible, relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for health and reasons for prohibition, and a concluding restatement. The reader can follow the progression from illness to public safety and pollution. You also use signposting such as “To commence with,” “Additionally,” and “To recapitulate,” which helps identify the stages of the argument. However, these transitions sometimes feel formulaic, and links within sentences are not always clear—for example, the sentence beginning “To explain it” combines the effects on smokers and non-smokers in a confusing way. The conclusion repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions, while ensuring each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “passive smoker,” “harmful smoke,” “air pollution,” and “industrial area,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “multifarious rationales” and “plethora of ailment,” but these are not always natural or accurately formed. Several spelling errors—“illen ess,” “Georage,” and “Washingston”—and awkward collocations such as “over consumption of smoking” reduce precision. Some wording is also repetitive, particularly repeated references to “harmful” effects and smoking being banned. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than choosing elaborate words; a smaller set of well-controlled expressions will make the argument clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because” and “which,” and the overall message can usually be understood. However, errors occur often enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “consumption of drugs are increasing” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “smoking generate harmful smoke” and “it produce litter” also need agreement correction. The sentence “those individuals who do smoking they face…” has an unclear structure, and several sentences run ideas together without effective punctuation. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly attached supporting clause. Check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries carefully, especially when using longer explanations.
