Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You take a position that smoking is harmful and should be restricted, and you give relevant reasons, including lung damage, cancer, breathing problems, and pollution. These examples show an attempt to address the topic. However, the question asks how far you agree that smoking should be made illegal, and your position is not consistently clear: the opening says “we don't make smoking illegal,” while later you say the government should make it illegal. The response also gives little explanation of why prohibition is preferable to other measures, and several claims are asserted rather than supported. State your degree of agreement clearly, then develop two or three reasons with explanation and a relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a recognisable focus on the harms of smoking, and some linking expressions—such as “Due to” and “not only…but also”—show an effort to connect ideas. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, so the reader cannot easily distinguish the position, supporting reasons, and conclusion. Ideas also shift abruptly from illness to government action, personal communication, and ozone depletion. Repeated statements such as “Smoking is very bad” do not create clear progression, and references such as “this type of pollution” are not always easy to follow. Use separate paragraphs for your view, health effects, and policy, and connect each point in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “cancer,” “lungs,” “breathing,” “pollution,” and “government,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with “bad,” “health,” and “smoking” appearing frequently. Several inaccurate word choices or spellings make meaning difficult to interpret, for example “hunt the cancer of lunger,” “joint the majority,” and “smoking things.” Some expressions, such as “smoking increase the air pollution,” also need more natural collocation. Build a small set of accurate phrases for health effects and policy, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would make your reasons clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to express several connected ideas, including a contrast with “but” and a cause-and-effect relationship with “Due to.” Most sentences, however, rely on short, simple patterns, and errors in sentence construction and agreement frequently make the message hard to follow. For example, “smoking make illegal” lacks a clear subject and correct verb form, while “smoking increase the pollution” does not show subject–verb agreement. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and punctuation, as in “the majority” and the inconsistent spacing around full stops. Practise forming complete subject–verb sentences first, then add accurate clauses using “because,” “although,” and “which.”
