Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear in the opening: “I largely agree,” and the response stays focused on the harms of smoking and possible government action. You give relevant points, including illness, addiction, mental health, taxation and treatment. However, the task is only partially addressed because these points are mostly listed rather than explained or supported with specific examples. The claim that smokers have “limited relationships” is not developed, and the response does not explore the extent of your agreement beyond repeating that smoking should be banned. The response is also 53 words below the required minimum, which leaves too little space to develop the argument. Explain why prohibition is preferable to regulation and support key claims with a relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing expressions such as “First and foremost,” “Furthermore” and “to sum up” help signal the stages of the argument. The main ideas are generally grouped sensibly, with health effects followed by possible measures. However, links between some points are abrupt, and the second body paragraph combines laws, public awareness and treatment without explaining how these measures relate. Some transitions are mechanical, while unclear references such as “this latter” make the connection to the previous idea harder to follow. Develop one central point per paragraph and use clearer links to show cause, consequence and contrast.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “widespread,” “addiction,” “imposing strict laws,” “negative effects” and “suitable treatment.” This gives you some range beyond basic statements. However, spelling and word-choice errors are frequent enough to make parts of the response difficult to read, for example “phonomenon,” “reserotatry deseases,” “sensibilsation” and “ditch of this addiction.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “threat smokers life” and “limited relationships in their neighbours.” Aim to learn accurate topic-specific phrases and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions such as “respiratory diseases,” “pose a threat to smokers’ lives” and “raise public awareness” would make your meaning clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple statements and some attempts at longer structures, including “I largely agree that smoking should be banned” and the sentence beginning “Therefore, government must…”. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction, agreement, articles and punctuation. For example, “this latter affects” does not agree with its subject, “smoking leads to various illnesses” is followed by an incomplete list, and “government must” needs an article or plural form. Several sentences begin with lowercase letters, and the final paragraph uses sentence fragments after full stops. Practise building accurate complex sentences with clauses such as “Although smoking causes serious illness,…” and check subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries.
