Student answer (Band 5.0)
THE statement "smoking can cause serious illness and should be illegal" is hundred and ten percent true and i definitely agree with this.
because its very dangerous to our life one my teacher told us that smoking one tike reduces 5 minutes of our life and its also true smoking destroys our internal organs we may looks okay from outside but from inside we are just destroying and killing ourself it causes many harmful diseases like liver damage, cancer ,heart fail and many other some of them even dont have cure so why should we all are taking risk of our lide is our life that cheap and worthless?
a big no so we should not smoke in starting it will look cool and good but when days will pass and you will realise that it is not good for u and just killing you from inside but you will not be able to leave it at that time because when u will realise it will be too late so its better to stay away from the things u will regret to after some time even when u smoke you are killing yourself but no you are killing all of them who are sitting/standing near u because the gas it releases are so bad and harmful that it even damages the person organs of person who stands near you when u smoke so will will just say you this that please dont smoke save your life and other life too your life is very valuable and there is your family who loves u alot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is unmistakable: you strongly agree that smoking should be illegal, and you give relevant reasons, including harm to smokers, serious diseases, and the effects of second-hand smoke on others. The reference to a teacher’s claim about lost minutes of life also attempts to support your view with an example. However, the response addresses the issue only partially because it mainly urges people not to smoke rather than explaining why smoking should be made illegal. The claim about illness is broad, and the argument would be stronger with accurate, specific support and consideration of how a ban could work or what objections might arise. Develop these points into a clearer argument focused on the proposed law.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable overall direction: it begins with your opinion, gives reasons against smoking, and ends by appealing to readers to protect themselves and others. However, ideas are crowded into a single extended block, so there is no clear paragraph progression. Connections rely heavily on repeated forms such as “and,” “but,” and “so,” while several shifts—from personal illness to second-hand smoke and then family—are not clearly signposted. Some references are also difficult to follow, particularly “it will be too late” and “the gas it releases.” Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting arguments, and conclusion, and connect each point with precise transitions and clear references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “internal organs,” “harmful diseases,” “cancer,” and “second-hand” effects, which helps communicate your concerns. However, the range is limited and several expressions are informal or imprecise for an academic essay, such as “hundred and ten percent,” “look cool,” and “a big no.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, including “tike,” “lide,” and “leave it” where “quit” would be more natural. Some disease examples are not expressed accurately, and “the gas it releases” is vague. Aim for more precise terms such as “smoking causes,” “addiction,” and “passive smoking,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Your response communicates a basic argument, and you attempt to link ideas in longer sentences using words such as “because,” “when,” and “but.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and many of these extended sentences are faulty or difficult to follow. For example, “because its very dangerous to our life one my teacher told us” lacks a clear sentence boundary and has an unclear structure; “we may looks okay” has incorrect subject–verb agreement; and “you will not be able to leave it” does not use the natural verb pattern for quitting smoking. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, with long run-on sentences. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas with accurate clauses and punctuation.
