To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Smoking is a serious public health concern and it cause more illness.

I am strongly agree because it is harming both smokers and passive smokers.

Nowadays, every individual is addicted to this habit and this is very serious issue because smoking can cause lung cancer and also cause heart dieases. It also effect the person that smoke and also have consequences for passive smokers . It also cause many other medical issues such as difficulty in breathing morever a stains on finger and lips. Government should ban smoking and take serious action against those who smoke.

Smoking is now become a crucial topic to discuss on social mediia because many individuals are not aware from soking consequences.it is just destroying our youths and they are getting addicted to this and they are also guiding little children to do this act. i am just giving example from our neighbourhood that there was a very little child who worked in mechanic shop his boss was addicted to smoking and when he smoked liitle boy alwasys avoid him to smoke but with the passage of time boy also start smoking and daily he smoke. i am trying o say that when one person smoke he also encourages other to smoke thats it shoul ban in society.

So,to stop this chain we must take strict measurements to ban this action because cause serious health issues and also have a bad impact on environment and individuals. To avoid this we must give instructions to each and everyone and aware them about health issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you strongly agree that smoking should be banned, and you address health effects, passive smoking, and the influence smokers may have on children. The neighbourhood example gives your argument a relevant, concrete illustration. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the claims about illness and environmental harm are mostly stated rather than explained, and the example does not establish how common this influence is. The response also moves from health risks to a complete ban without considering why prohibition is preferable to measures such as restrictions or education. To strengthen the argument, explain the reasoning behind your proposed policy and develop each main point with a specific consequence or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall shape: it states your view, gives reasons and an example, then ends with a recommendation. However, progression within and between paragraphs is not consistently clear. The second paragraph combines several health effects and a policy recommendation, while the next shifts to social media, young people, and a long personal example. Connectives such as “also” and “because” are repeated, and phrases such as “So, to stop this chain” do not clearly identify the chain of events. Use one focused paragraph for health harms and another for social influence, with clear topic sentences and more precise links between claims and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “public health concern,” “passive smokers,” “lung cancer,” and “heart diseases,” so the reader can follow your main ideas. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “addicted to this habit” overgeneralises, “aware from” is not idiomatic, and “stains on finger and lips” is unclear in this context. Errors such as “dieases,” “mediia,” and “soking” also make the writing less controlled. Build a more accurate set of phrases for discussing health risks and policy, and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you express the argument without relying repeatedly on “smoking,” “cause,” and “serious.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate your main position using mostly straightforward sentence patterns, and you attempt longer structures to explain consequences and tell the neighbourhood example. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “it cause more illness” needs subject–verb agreement, while “I am strongly agree” uses an incorrect verb pattern. In “when he smoked little boy always avoid him,” the time clause and main clause do not have consistent, accurate forms. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also unreliable, particularly in the long example. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled clauses using “because,” “when,” and “which”; proofread for agreement and complete sentence structure.
