Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, smoking has become a subject of considerable debate. While some people believe that it can causes several illnesses and must be made illegal, I firmly agree with this view. This essay will examine the principal arguments underpinning my position.

The primary rationale for my agreement with the viewpoint is that smoking is harmful for health. This can largely be attributed to the fact that several diseases such as lung cancer may effect people. Furthermore, it also increases cost for people beacuse poor many people may not take proper treatment. As a result, they involve many illegal activities that may cause serious violence in future. In addition, it is a bad habit for young generations. For example, most of the young generations addicted with smoking. As a result, they may be affected with cancer and it may serious position to died. Therefore, it is evident that peple should be aware about its serious issues.

Another compelling justification for my position is that smoking may harm our future generation to build their career. They may spend more money for smoking rather than their educational purpose. For instance, if a student do smoking, so he will sick and do not attend his college and effect it his acedemic study. As a result, it effect on his study and also his health. Government should be made smoking illegal. They also should creat new rules and regulations to reduce illnesses.

In conclusion, smoking has many demerits that harm people's health. I believe that it should be ban and take necessary steps to minimize diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I firmly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion, and you give relevant reasons involving health, young people, and education. These points address the question, but they are not all developed equally. The health paragraph mentions lung cancer and young people, while the claims about treatment costs leading to illegal activity and violence are not clearly explained or connected to why smoking should be illegal. The education example is relevant, but its consequences are repeated rather than explored. To strengthen the response, explain how prohibition could reduce smoking-related harm and support each main claim with a clear, specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with separate main themes, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result” introduces consequences that do not clearly follow from the preceding point, and the move from treatment costs to illegal activities is difficult to follow. The second body paragraph also repeats the effect on study and health. Improve progression by making each paragraph develop one central claim in a logical sequence, and use pronouns and linking phrases only when their references and relationships are clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “considerable debate,” “lung cancer,” “future generation,” and “rules and regulations,” so the reader can understand the general subject and your position. However, the range is limited, and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make parts of the argument difficult to interpret: “poor many people,” “serious position to died,” and “harm our future generation to build their career.” Spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “peple,” and “acedemic” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of phrases for discussing health risks, addiction, and legal measures, and check spelling and natural word combinations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concession in the opening (“While some people believe…”) and conditional examples (“if a student do smoking…”). However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction sometimes make meaning unclear. Examples include “it can causes,” “a student do smoking,” and “it should be ban.” Some sentences also combine clauses awkwardly, as in “if a student do smoking, so he will sick and do not attend his college.” Practise forming accurate conditional sentences and checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns. More reliable control of these structures would make your reasoning easier to follow.
