Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You take a position, stating that smoking “should not be made illegal,” and you attempt to support it with health effects and a relative’s experience. However, the response does not clearly answer the question: the opening appears to say smoking causes illness but should not be illegal, while the later reference to youth and illegality is difficult to interpret. The example about lung cancer is relevant, but its details and connection to your position are unclear, and the opposing considerations are not explored. The response is also 134 words below the required minimum, so there is not enough development to address the task fully. State your degree of agreement clearly, then explain and support two reasons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to move from a position to supporting points, including a health claim and a personal example. However, the ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the progression is difficult to follow. For example, “In my relatives there is one person” leads into a confusing account of illness, followed by “so you agree with me,” without a clear explanation of how the example supports the argument. The final sentences about young people repeat ideas but do not establish a clear relationship between smoking, legality, and health. Use separate paragraphs for your position, reasons, and conclusion, and connect each point with clear, accurate linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “serious illnesses,” “lung cancer,” “lung infection,” and “illegal,” which shows an attempt to discuss health and law. However, vocabulary is often inaccurate or repetitive, and several choices make the meaning hard to understand. For instance, “provenance by some scienc” does not clearly express the intended idea, while “severance diseases” appears to be an incorrect choice for severe diseases. “Smoking” and “illegal” are repeated without much variation, and spelling errors such as “somking” and “canner” reduce clarity. Build a small set of accurate topic phrases and check spelling and collocations; this will help you express your ideas more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, such as “smoking can cause such … diseases it cause…” and the account of your relative. However, sentence boundaries and clause relationships are often unclear, and errors in verb forms and sentence construction make several ideas difficult to follow. For example, “it cause Lung cancer” does not maintain correct subject–verb agreement, while “one person who smoking” lacks a correctly formed verb phrase. The final section also shifts between “he” and “they” without a clear grammatical reference. Practise building complete sentences with a subject and verb, then join related clauses using accurate connectors. Check verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
