Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking has been one of the major issues in our society. Some people argue that due to its serious health concerns it should be made illegal. I completely agree because smoking can leads to various deadly diseases and isolation from the society.

Smoking could result in serious health issues. There are 70 unknown carciogens in a cigarette that if inhaled can result into lung problems especially lung cancer. For example, a person who is smoking regularly are more likely to die early as compared to a normal individual. So, by making smoking products illegal we can limit the access which eventually can improve the overall situation. If these smoking items are not publicaly avaliable, it could help someone who wants to come out of this habbit.

Another big issue that is caused by smoking is the isolation form thr family and the society. People around a smoking person usually avoid in order to protect themselves from passive smoking. Due to the filter behind the cigarette, active somking is less hazardous than passive. As a result, the family and friends around start avoiding them even they face bullying and bad comments and consequently they might fall in depression. For instance, there is a large number of thoes people who are in depression due to the behaviour of their friends and family.

In conclusion, I completely agree that the governments should put sanctions on all smoking products. This will reduce the access to these harmful items and will help individuals to leave this bad addiction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you completely agree that smoking should be prohibited. You give two relevant reasons—serious illness and social consequences—and include examples such as lung cancer and people avoiding smokers. This addresses the task, but the support is uneven. The health argument explains how restricting access might help, while the claim that smoking causes isolation and depression is less clearly established; the point about passive smoking also needs a more precise explanation. To strengthen the response, develop each reason with a clearer chain of cause and effect, and acknowledge a relevant consideration such as whether prohibition is practical or whether regulation and cessation support may be more effective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from health effects to social effects is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example,” “As a result,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, the move from passive smoking to bullying and depression is abrupt, and “Due to the filter behind the cigarette” does not clearly connect to the claim that passive smoking is more hazardous. Improve cohesion by explaining these links directly and using pronouns or transitions only when their references are unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “serious health issues,” “lung cancer,” “passive smoking,” “sanctions,” and “addiction,” so the reader can understand your main points. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “carcinogens” and “isolation.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes distract: “carciogens,” “publicaly,” “avaliable,” “habbit,” and “somking” should be corrected. Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, including “isolation form thr family” and “the filter behind the cigarette.” Build accuracy by checking spelling carefully and learning common collocations, for example “access to tobacco products” and “social isolation.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional and result structures such as “If these smoking items are not… available, it could help…” and “As a result…”. Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “smoking can leads” should be “smoking can lead,” and “a person who is smoking regularly are” needs subject–verb agreement (“a person who smokes regularly is”). The sentence beginning “There are 70 unknown carcinogens… that if inhaled…” is also difficult to control and would be clearer if divided or restructured. To improve, check agreement and verb forms, and practise building complex sentences with clear clause boundaries and punctuation.
