Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that smoking is injurious to health and it is also a worldwide debate. I strongly agree with this statement smoking can cause serious illnesses although making it illegal will be diffcult to impliment.

To begin with, Smoking is extremly harmful for health as it contain nicotine and other harmful chemical that causes serious illness like lung cancer and breathing issues. According to the World Healh Organization, many people die every year due to smoking-related diseases. If smoking is banned, many lives could be saved. Smoking not only harms the smoker but also harms other people thats are in surroundings. For example, When a person smokes in public place like a bus stop or a restaurants, other people are forced to inhale the smoke. This is very dangerous for children and old people. Therefore, bannning smoking in public places and making it illegal will protect non-smokers.

Moreover, some people argue that people have the right to make their own choices. They say that tobacco industry play a significant role in economy also provides jobs and taxes revenue for the government. However, health is better than money. So government can find other sources of income, but it cannot bring back lost lives.

In conclusion, although smoking is a personal choice for some, its negetive effects on health are undeniable. I strongly believe that it should be made illegal to protect both smokers and non smokers and to create a heatlhier society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly agree that smoking should be illegal, and you give relevant reasons, including illness, second-hand smoke, and the economic argument about jobs and tax revenue. The public-place example helps explain the risk to others. However, the response addresses the proposal only partly: it moves between banning smoking in public places and making smoking illegal altogether, without explaining how a complete ban could work or addressing the distinction. The economic counterargument is acknowledged but only briefly answered. The response is also 9 words below the required minimum, and the ideas would benefit from further explanation and specific supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression from health effects to the counterargument is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This coherent structure meets the expected level, with some evidence of more flexible organisation. However, links can feel mechanical, and the first body paragraph combines several points—illness, deaths, second-hand smoke, and a public ban—without fully separating or developing them. Clarify the relationship between banning smoking in public and making it illegal everywhere, and use referencing such as “these diseases” or “this restriction” to connect ideas more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “smoking-related diseases,” “tobacco industry,” “taxes revenue,” and “non-smokers.” Some choices show an attempt to be precise, but the range is limited and several spelling, word-form, or collocation errors are noticeable. Examples include “injurious to health,” “breathing issues,” and “health is better than money”; these are understandable but not always natural or exact in this argument. Spelling errors such as “diffcult,” “impliment,” and “negetive” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of natural expressions for health risks, regulation, and economic effects, and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If smoking is banned, many lives could be saved” and a concession in “although smoking is a personal choice for some.” These help express relationships between ideas. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “I strongly agree with this statement smoking can cause…” joins two clauses without appropriate punctuation or a linking word, while “it contain nicotine” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and spacing after full stops. Practise combining clauses accurately and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
