Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that dangerous diseases can be caused by smoking and this should be banned by making it illegal. I totally agree with this perspective because smoking brings untold miseries to human lives.

One of the primary serious causes of smoking is a lung disease. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is very hamful for health. Regularly taking only one puff of cigarettes can damage our body organs, especially our lungs as it is directly connectes with inhaling system. For instance, studies show that a chain smoker's lungs become completely damaged at only age of 40 compared with a non-smoker. Furthermore, smoking also have negative impacts on our environment. When a smoker exhales their smoke, it mixes with air which causes air pollution. It also dangerous for non-smoker as they have to live in this polluted air. Thus, they suffer from various illnes such as respiratoty problems, asthma, headache, and anxiety.

To help people get rid of this situation, smoking should be made illegal. Every products related with smoking require to be banned. Nowadays people of all ages particularly young generation has become too much addicted to smoking. Teenagers consider smoking as a fashion, they think if they do not smoke, thet will fail to follow the trend. So,these products should not be marketed, and Government should make legislation against smoking to change this situation.

In conclusion, smoking is a topic which is very relevant to modern society. However, I believe quite strongly that smoking is the reason of some dreadful illness such as lung disease, asthma, and respiratoty problems. So, Government should take immediate steps to make it illegal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I totally agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both the health risks of smoking and the proposal to make it illegal, giving relevant examples such as lung disease, second-hand smoke, and teenagers viewing smoking as fashionable. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that one puff can damage organs and the comparison about chain smokers’ lungs at age 40 need clearer support or qualification. The argument for prohibition also needs more development, such as explaining how a ban would be enforced or why it would be more effective than other measures. Developing these ideas more carefully would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on health and environmental effects, a paragraph proposing a ban, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from the harms of smoking to a possible solution, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Thus,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. At times, however, the connections are mechanical or unclear. The second paragraph moves from lung disease to pollution without a clear transition, while “To help people get rid of this situation” does not specify which problem is being addressed. Some references, such as “this situation” and “these products,” could be more precise. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the main argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “negative impacts,” “air pollution,” “addicted,” and “legislation,” which helps communicate the topic and your position. There are also attempts at more emphatic language, such as “untold miseries” and “dreadful illness,” though these are not always natural or precise in context. Several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce accuracy: “hamful,” “illnes,” and “respiratoty” are misspelled, while “Every products related with smoking” and “the reason of some dreadful illness” are awkward expressions. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, “smoking-related products” and “a cause of serious illnesses” would express these ideas more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because smoking brings…”) and a conditional-style explanation (“if they do not smoke…”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “smoking also have negative impacts” should use a singular verb, and “it is directly connectes with inhaling system” has an unclear and incorrectly formed structure. In “Every products … require to be banned,” the determiner, plural noun, and verb pattern do not agree. There are also punctuation and spacing slips, such as “So,these.” Review subject–verb agreement and practise building accurate complex sentences; greater control would make your ideas easier to follow.
