Student answer (Band 5.5)

I totally agreed with the statement that smoking must be banned in a country because it causes serious life-threatening disorders and diseases among the people. Many people caught by its diseases because of their habbit and became irresistable. As a result, it would become fatal for their mental and physical health. For example, smoking is injurious to physical health, as it causes nausia and heart-stroke among the people. A significant effects of smoking have been seen among the people who developed the habbit of doing smoking, three times a day. This resulted in liver and lung failure among the people. Most people have been suffered with the cancer due to their habit of smoking. Because of the sufficient intake of chemicals, smoking found injurious to the physical health. The people also suffers with the mental health, if they don't find the sufficient intake of nicotine.

Most teenagers and adults have been observed in smoking activities because of their social circles. They do smoking accompained by their friends at the public places and cafeterias. In order to prevent such type of social issues, government should be made impose on such activities and considered it as illegal by the help of rules and regulations. Therefore, smoking effects should be reduced to minimal by the help of these policies. I would futher recommend, government should impose a penalty to those who violates these rules.

To conclude, smoking causes serious illness and should be banned in the country in order to prevent the people from the side-effects of smoking. This ban helps the government to remove this social issue from the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that smoking should be banned, and you give relevant reasons, including serious health effects and smoking among teenagers and adults in social settings. The examples of cancer and lung failure help address the health argument, while your recommendation of penalties adds a policy response. However, some points are asserted rather than explained: the claim that smoking causes nausea and stroke, for instance, is not developed, and the discussion of nicotine and mental health is unclear. The response addresses the main parts of the question, but the case for making smoking illegal would be stronger if you considered how a ban could work and supported your claims with more precise explanation or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: it introduces your position, develops health and social arguments in separate paragraphs, and ends with a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “As a result,” “Therefore,” and “To conclude” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “A significant effects” begins a point without clearly linking it to the preceding example, and the shift from health consequences to nicotine dependence is abrupt. The second paragraph also moves quickly from peer influence to government penalties without explaining the connection in detail. Use clearer topic sentences and develop each paragraph around one main point, with references that make it clear what “these policies” and “this ban” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “life-threatening disorders,” “physical health,” “social circles,” and “penalty.” These choices show an attempt to discuss health and government action, but the range is limited by repeated use of “people,” “smoking,” and “habbit,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate. For example, “caught by its diseases” and “sufficient intake of chemicals” do not express your intended meaning naturally; “affected by smoking-related diseases” and “exposure to harmful chemicals” would be clearer. Spelling errors such as “habbit,” “nausia,” and “futher” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range of health-related terms and check spelling and common word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause with “because” and a conditional sentence beginning “if.” The main message is generally understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction make parts difficult to follow. For example, “I totally agreed” should use the present form “I totally agree,” and “A significant effects … have been seen” has a mismatch between the singular article and plural noun. In “The people also suffers,” the verb does not agree with its subject; “government should be made impose” is also structurally unclear. Practise forming accurate subject–verb patterns and use a wider range of controlled complex sentences, checking each clause for a clear subject and verb.
