Student answer (Band 6.0)
Smoking is the source of life threathening diseases and should be restricted by government. I side with this statement, as majority of people are addicted to it which impacts their family life and also influences the younger generation to consume it. I will be discussing both opinions in the subsequent paragraphs.
Smoking addiction not only harms the personal health of the user but also impacts their direct family members who live with them. We have observed number of cases where people end up destroying their family life by smoking addiction. According to the statistics, non-smokers or passive smokers, who are direct in touch of smokers are more likely to have serious health problems caused by smoke than the smokers themselves. This is a serious issue if small children are impacted from this which leads to hazardous situations.
Additionally, younger generations might be highly influenced to smoke which will lead to even dangerous health problems in the nearby future where hospitals will be filled with young faces having serious illnesses. For instance, a young person looks up to their parents or even their ideal person and observes their smoking habits. They find inspiration to follow the same habit even though it is not very appropriate. This will end up being more disastourous as not only their addiction would be difficult to get rid of but we cannot undo their health risks. Smoking from a really young age is even more harsh to deal with.
Lastly, Smoking itself is harmful without any actual benfit, so it is better that there are restrictions and even labelled as illegal by the government. This would atleast help the people to limit their addiction to smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that smoking should be restricted or made illegal, and you give relevant reasons involving harm to family members and the influence on young people. The examples about children exposed to smoke and young people copying parents help connect your points to the issue. However, the response does not fully develop the central question of making smoking illegal: it mainly explains why smoking is harmful, with little discussion of how a legal ban would work or why it is preferable to other restrictions. The claim that passive smokers are more likely to suffer serious problems than smokers is also presented without support. Develop this comparison and explain the likely benefits or drawbacks of prohibition to make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs giving reasons, and a concluding statement. Sequencing phrases such as “Additionally” and “Lastly” make the progression easy to follow, and each body paragraph has a recognisable focus. Some connections are less precise or feel mechanical, however. The introduction promises to discuss “both opinions,” but the essay does not actually present a counterargument, which creates an expectation that is not fulfilled. The transition from the effects on families to the claim about hospitals being filled with young people is also abrupt. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and either address an opposing view or revise the introduction to reflect the one-sided argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “passive smokers,” “health problems,” “addiction,” and “health risks,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more emphatic language, such as “life-threatening diseases” and “hazardous situations.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “direct in touch of smokers,” “nearby future,” and “more harsh to deal with.” Spelling errors such as “threathening,” “disastourous,” and “benfit” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, describe people as “in close contact with smokers” and refer to “the near future.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “passive smokers, who are direct in touch of smokers” and a conditional structure in “if small children are impacted.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “as majority of people” needs an article, and “which impacts their family life” has an unclear reference and agreement relationship. The sentence beginning “This is a serious issue if small children are impacted from this” also has an awkward passive construction and unclear pronoun reference. Review articles, clause links, and sentence boundaries, and make sure each pronoun clearly refers to the intended idea. More consistently controlled complex sentences would strengthen the response.
