Student answer (Band 6.0)
Smoking is one of the worst habit of people which causes a number of disease if consume tobacco products. Though it generates substantial revenue for government, in my opinion it should be declared illegal and ban from every country in order to protect public health from serious damage.
Smoking start from consuming tobacco products which contain a dangerous chemical called nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance of tobacco which made people habituate on it. Due to addictive nature, people find very hard to quit smoking. As a result, it causes heart disease such as heart block or stroke, higher risk of cancer what eventually result in death after a certain period. A person who smokes regularly will face difficulties in breathing. Regular smoking can damage lung subject to lung cancer.
Furthermore, it badly effects on brain result in memory loss, reduce the level of testosterone, metabolism that ultimately creates physcial weakness. Over 8 million people in the world die directly because of smoking every year. In South Asia, over 100 millions of people are suffering for a number disease due to smoking. Smoking kills the inner crucial part of our body then gradually take into ultimate death. Moreover, it is a complete waste of money because to buy tobacco products people are spending money and due to its adverse efffect public have no option left except visiting hospital to recover which causes further cost.
In conclusion, there is nothing good in smoking except wasting money and valuable life. Therefore, it is better to stay out of it. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you agree that smoking should be illegal, and the conclusion reinforces this by calling for restrictions on buying and selling tobacco. You give relevant reasons, including addiction, serious health effects, deaths, and financial costs, so the response addresses the task. Some support is more developed than other points: the discussion of nicotine and illness explains the health argument, while claims about testosterone, metabolism, and the South Asian figures are asserted without explanation or a clear link to the case for prohibition. To strengthen the response, develop fewer points with specific, credible examples and explain why making smoking illegal would be more effective than regulation or other measures. This would make the argument more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present health and financial reasons, and the conclusion restates your recommendation. Connectors such as “Furthermore,” “As a result,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. However, some links feel mechanical, and ideas within the second body paragraph are crowded together: effects on the brain, global deaths, regional illness, and personal costs appear in quick succession. The reference in “which causes further cost” is also not fully clear. Group related points more carefully, use topic sentences to guide each paragraph, and explain the relationship between evidence and your position. This would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on signposting words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “addictive substance,” “adverse effect,” “public health,” and “prohibition,” which helps communicate the subject. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural. Examples include “worst habit,” “habituate on it,” “effects on brain,” and “suffering for a number disease”; “physcial” and “efffect” also contain spelling errors. Some expressions, such as “Smoking kills the inner crucial part of our body,” are difficult to interpret precisely. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “a harmful habit,” “become dependent on nicotine,” and “suffer from several smoking-related diseases.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise health-related terms would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and attempts at complex sentences, for example the opening concession beginning “Though it generates substantial revenue” and the cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Due to addictive nature.” This shows some range, and your main position remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur: “Smoking start,” “which made people habituate,” and “it should be declared illegal and ban” do not form accurate grammatical patterns. The sentence beginning “Furthermore, it badly effects on brain result in memory loss” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Review subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete, correctly linked clause. More accurate control of these patterns, alongside your attempts at complex sentences, would make the argument easier to follow.
