Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.
To what extent do you agree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many people believe that smoking should be made illegal due to the medical complications an individual can have. Although many people might disagree to this statement, I firmly believe that smoking should be banned across all countries as it does not give any health benefits to people, it only adds burden to the community and its people.
Arguably, many people disagree in banning the use of cigarette in many countries for the reason that, it gives employment to the poeple and that it helps the economy due to its high demand. Cutting this trend will make these people unemployed and the economy can be affected. As a result, people continues to smoke as there are no regulations of completely stopping the use of smoke.
However, medical professions argue that smoking has always been bad for the health and that it does not give any benefit to a person at all. In fact, it is the leading cause of medical conditions such as increase in blood pressure and heart rate that can further develop to cardiovascular problems or worse, death. As a result, smokers requres serious medical attention that can lead to life-threatening situations.
Moreover, second-hand smokers are also at risk to many health conditions because of inhaling the same smoke, they develop lung problems. For example, vulnerable people such as children and older adults who are exposed can develop asthma or lung complications. As a result, more people are becoming severely ill due to the effects of smokers.
In conclusion, although production of cigarette are beneficial to some companies and individuals, I firmly believe that smoking and the production of cigarette should be banned in many countries because it does not only give the smokers bad health conditions, but the people from the community are also at risk to these medical conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you firmly support making smoking illegal, and you address both health effects and a counterargument about employment and the economy. The discussion of cardiovascular risks and second-hand smoke is relevant, with children and older adults offered as examples. This meets the task well, and the counterargument shows awareness of another perspective. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for instance, the economic impact of a ban is mentioned but not weighed against the public-health benefits, and the health examples could be developed with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning. Extending these ideas and qualifying broad claims would make the argument more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, separate paragraphs present the economic counterargument and health arguments, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. The organisation is generally easy to follow, but cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated use of “As a result” and repeated references to “medical conditions.” Some links also do not clearly express the relationship between ideas; for example, the sentence about people continuing to smoke after discussing employment and the economy needs a more explicit connection. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer referencing to make the flow more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “medical complications,” “cardiovascular problems,” “second-hand smokers,” and “vulnerable people.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common terms show an attempt to be precise. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “medical professions argue,” “the use of smoke,” and “adds burden to the community.” There are also spelling errors, including “poeple” and “requres,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and precise forms—for example, refer to “health professionals,” “smoking,” and “places a burden on the community.” This would strengthen the vocabulary without changing your clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including concession clauses such as “Although many people might disagree” and a relative clause in “conditions such as increase in blood pressure and heart rate that can further develop.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “many people continues to smoke,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “smokers requres,” which also has an agreement error. In “production of cigarette are beneficial,” the singular/plural forms do not match. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and plural forms, and check long sentences for clear clause structure. More consistent accuracy would make your argument easier to read.
