Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify smoking as harmful and provide relevant examples, including its effects on your husband and the risks of toxic substances. However, the response does not clearly answer the central question: whether smoking should be made illegal, and to what extent you agree. Most of the writing describes health consequences rather than explaining or defending a position on prohibition. The final point about younger people is unfinished, and there is little development of reasons or examples beyond the family account. The response is also 44 words below the required minimum, which limits the opportunity to address the task fully. State your position directly, then explain and support it with developed reasons, including consideration of why a ban would or would not be appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic progression from general comments about smoking to its health effects and then to a personal example. This gives the reader some sense of the topic, and the family example is relevant. However, the response is presented largely as one continuous paragraph, so the main points are not clearly separated. Connections between ideas are often abrupt, and punctuation makes sentence boundaries difficult to identify; for example, the shift from the family account to the list of toxic substances is not clearly signposted. The ending is incomplete, so the response has no clear conclusion. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons, and conclusion, and connect each point with clear transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “toxic substances,” “carbon monoxide,” and “lung cancer,” and these terms help communicate the health risks you have in mind. There are also attempts to describe effects, such as “difficulty in breathing.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are frequent, including “dagerous,” “harmfull,” and “genration,” and some expressions are unclear or unnatural, such as “accustomed of it” and “bad caugh.” Repetition of “smoking,” “bad,” and “usually” also limits the range. Build a more accurate set of health and policy vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations so your meaning is easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response includes mostly simple statements and attempts some longer structures, such as the sentence beginning “although there is an awareness…” and the description of your husband’s smoking history. These attempts show some ability to connect clauses, but control is inconsistent. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are often missing, and there are errors in agreement and verb forms, as in “he usually feel” and “he had been adopted this bad habit.” Articles and sentence construction are also unreliable, making some passages difficult to read. Practise writing complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement and tense consistency. Using a few accurately controlled complex sentences would improve the range as well as clarity.
