IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some believe smoking causes severe health issues and should be made illegal. I totally agree with this view because this will stop businesses involve in manufacturing smoke materials to stop, as well as, reduce the number of health problems caused by smoking.

To begin with, making smoking illegal will help reduce the production of the items citizens smoke. Many companies are involve in production of smoking substances despite the fact that it is very detrimental to peoples' health. For instances, a firm in Nigeria produce thousands of cigrattes and tobaco consistently without minding the damage it causes in individuals life. Hence, if smoking will be put under law, companies involve in such production will be stop.

Another significant reason,is the reduction in the number of health problems caused by smoking. Smoking cigratte, tobacco and others causes serious health issues like cancer. This is as result of the ingredients use in producing them and the flame. To illustate, a 27 yeras man was recently diagnosed of throat cancer, and after series of investigations and history taken, it was discovered to be caused by smoking. So therefore, with the implementation of law as regards to smoking, will help reduce individuals indulging in such habits and as well reduce their chance of coming down with such illness associated with smoking.

In conclusion, I completely agree that smoking should be put under law because it will help stop the production of smoking products by companies,as well as, minimize the number of health challenges such as certain types of cancers citizens suffer as a result of smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you completely agree that smoking should be illegal. You give two relevant reasons—reducing the production of smoking products and preventing smoking-related illness—and include examples, such as the Nigerian cigarette firm and the man diagnosed with throat cancer. This addresses the task, but the support is uneven. The first reason assumes that making smoking illegal would stop manufacturers, without explaining how the law would be enforced or addressing possible illegal production. The health argument is more directly connected to the prompt, though the example is brief and does not establish how a ban would reduce illness. Develop these points with clearer explanation and more precise supporting evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Transitions such as “To begin with,” “Another significant reason,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the progression. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “So therefore” repeats the same linking function, while “with the implementation of law as regards to smoking, will help” does not clearly connect its subject to the main verb. The first body paragraph also moves quickly from the example of a company to the claim that production would stop. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make the logical relationship between each claim, example, and conclusion explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “health issues,” “production,” “ingredients,” and “implementation of law.” Some phrases also show an attempt to use more formal language, such as “significant reason.” However, the range and control are limited by repeated or imprecise wording: “smoking substances,” “smoking products,” and “smoking materials” recur, and “put under law” is not a natural expression. Spelling errors such as “cigrattes,” “tobaco,” “illustate,” and “y eras” also make the writing less polished. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and vary key terms—for example, use “tobacco products” and “prohibit the sale and manufacture” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “despite the fact that,” and “after.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but control is inconsistent, and several sentence patterns are faulty. For example, “Many companies are involve” needs a correctly formed verb, while “companies involve in such production will be stop” has errors in both the clause and passive construction. The sentence beginning “So therefore, with the implementation…” lacks a clear grammatical subject. There are also agreement and article problems, as in “Smoking … causes” followed by a list, and “as result.” Work on complete sentence structure, subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and articles; then proofread punctuation and spacing, especially around commas and full stops.
