Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking can lead to severe illnesses and should be illegal. I do agree with the statement because smoking causes serious problems.

First of all, tobacco or the products made from tobacco are harmful. Cigarettes are made with nicotine and tar. If cigarettes are inhaled for a long period of time, it damages the overall health because nicotine gets mixed with the blood. As a result. it creates diseases associated with breathing problem or suffocation and sometimes a chain smoker feels that their stamina level is very low and they get exhausted even the physical activity is not that much intense. As it causes breathing problems, it leads to long-term coughing, insomnia and headache. Eventually, a lot of diseases create in the body of a smoker. It results in weaker natural immunity system. Moreover, overall health condition gets degraded day by day and eventually it leads to death.

For example, medical science studies has revealed that long-term smoking can cause cancer, particularly in the mouth and throat.

Smoking should be made illegal. People who are smokers often smoke in public places. It creates difficulty to walk on the street because the smoke from the cigarettes can be harmful for non-smokers. Most of the times, cigarettes or tobacco prodducts are cheap and thus these can be found easily. Depending on the availability of these commodities, teenagers are also being addicted besides adults. As a result, it is degrading moral values in the society and overall society. In order to preserve the moral values, these products must be announced illegal and laws should be enforced if needed. Therefore, the government can have the control over the issues created from smoking. It will also improve the socio-economic situation of the societies. Both physical and mental wellbeing can be seen.

In conclusion, I completely agree that smoking causes severe diseases and this should be made illegal as soon as possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you agree that smoking should be illegal. You address both the health effects and the impact of smoking on other people, with relevant points about illness, public exposure to smoke, and teenagers’ access to tobacco. The example linking long-term smoking with mouth and throat cancer also supports your argument. However, some claims are asserted rather than explained: the connection between smoking and “degrading moral values,” for instance, is not made clear, and the proposed benefits to society’s socio-economic situation are not supported. Develop these points with a specific explanation or example, and distinguish more carefully between the harms of smoking and why prohibition is the best response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present health and social arguments, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages. Within paragraphs, however, some links feel mechanical or unclear. The health paragraph moves from breathing problems to insomnia, headache, immunity, and death without showing how each point connects. “As a result” is also followed by a sentence fragment-like break in “As a result. it creates…”. The social paragraph’s shift from public smoke to moral values and socio-economic conditions is abrupt. Group related points and use clearer cause-and-effect links to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “nicotine,” “tar,” “long-term smoking,” “non-smokers,” and “physical and mental wellbeing.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “preserve” and “enforced.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “breathing problem,” “a chain smoker,” “diseases create in the body,” and “announced illegal.” There is also a spelling error in “prodducts.” Repeated use of broad terms such as “overall health” and “problems” limits precision. Choose more natural collocations and use specific terms for the effects you describe; this will make the argument sound more controlled and academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, for example, “If cigarettes are inhaled for a long period of time…” and “As it causes breathing problems, it leads to…”. This shows some range, and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, sentence boundaries, and verb forms. In “it damages the overall health,” the pronoun does not clearly agree with the plural subject “cigarettes”; “medical science studies has revealed” has a subject–verb agreement problem; and “eventually, a lot of diseases create in the body” uses an incorrect verb construction. The punctuation in “As a result. it creates…” also disrupts the sentence. Review agreement and sentence boundaries, and check that each clause has a complete, correctly formed verb.
