Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss health effects and suggest ways to reduce smoking, so the response is relevant to the topic. However, the question asks how far you agree that smoking should be made illegal, and your position on that proposal is not clearly stated or maintained. The introduction promises to explain effects and solutions, while the body proposes restrictions, designated smoking areas, and higher taxes without explaining whether these amount to making smoking illegal. Some support is also unclear: the example about alcohol taxes does not directly establish an effect on smoking, and the conclusion shifts to campaigns against selling alcohol. To strengthen the response, state your degree of agreement directly and develop relevant reasons and examples that support that position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph on effects, a paragraph on possible measures, and a conclusion. This gives the reader a basic route through the discussion. However, progression is uneven: the essay moves from smoking’s health effects to solutions, then introduces alcohol in both the example and conclusion, which weakens the focus. Linking phrases such as “To commence with,” “Shifting towards to solutions,” and “In other words” are sometimes awkward or do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. Some references are also difficult to follow, particularly “these objects” and “them.” Organise each paragraph around one clear point, connect examples directly to that point, and use simpler, more precise transitions and references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “addicted,” “cancer,” “dopamine,” “tax,” and “awareness,” and you try to express cause and effect. However, the range is limited and many word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “reason to serious health issues,” “short time of dopamine,” “smoking zons,” and “do not smoking direction.” Several words are repeatedly misspelled, such as “devlope,” “focuse,” and “appling,” while “alcoholic substances” is not an accurate substitute for tobacco products in this argument. Build a reliable set of phrases for health risks and policy measures, and check spelling and collocations so your intended meaning is consistently clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “as a result” and “while,” but control is inconsistent. Frequent errors in sentence construction and verb forms sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “it has reason to serious health issues” lacks a clear grammatical structure, and “smoking should be announced illegal on selling” does not form a clear passive construction. There are also problems with agreement and articles, as in “a awarness” and “number of smokers,” as well as sentence-boundary and capitalization errors after full stops. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses; carefully check articles, verb forms, and punctuation when editing.
