Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that severe health issues can be caused by smoking. So, it should be made illegal. I strongly agree with this point of view, as smoking is one of the leading cause of cancer and may lead to serious health complications. It can also cause serious health related issues for the people around smokers through passive smoking and can be life threatening in some cases.

Smoking is real threat to health. It can cause respiratory issues and can sometime lead to cancer. Cigrate has more than five thousand cancer causing agents. it involve combustion as well, which cause accumilation of carbon tar in lungs, hindring the normal function of lungs. Chronic smoking can sometime lead to cancer. If it increase the cancer cases in a country, it will put more pressure on the public health sector. Governements will have to allocate more funds for health sector. In this way, it may hinder the devolpment of that country and the person itself suffers a lot. By making smoking illegal, we can save on lots of money that will be spent on the cancer patients. This money will also compensate for the tax which will be paid by smokers on the purcahse of the smoking related products. So it make sense to ban the smoking.

Smoking not only hurt the smokers, but it also affects the people around the smokers through passive smoking. It is proven that passive smoking can be more harmful and may pose serious health concerns. Children around smokers are also on the risk. Keeping all this in mind , we should definitely legislate against smoking.

In conclussion, Smoking causes serious health concerns for smokers and people around. It also cause burden on public healthcare. Making it illegal will promise a better future for comming genrations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that smoking should be illegal, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address several relevant reasons, including cancer and other health effects, passive smoking, and pressure on public healthcare. The discussion of healthcare costs gives some explanation of the wider consequences, while the risks to children are mentioned but not developed with a specific example or further reasoning. Some claims, such as passive smoking being “more harmful,” are asserted rather than supported. To strengthen the response, explain how the proposed ban would work and acknowledge or answer a counterargument, such as the effect on personal choice or tax revenue. This would make the argument more fully developed and balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present health and social reasons, and a conclusion summarises the argument. Ideas generally progress logically within the paragraphs, and linking phrases such as “In this way” and “Keeping all this in mind” help show connections. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the first body paragraph moves quickly from health effects to public spending and then to tax revenue. The repeated use of “smoking” and “serious health” also makes the flow less varied. Group related points more tightly, and use clearer references when moving from individual harm to national costs. A more deliberate progression between claims and explanations would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “passive smoking,” “respiratory issues,” “public health sector,” and “health complications,” which allows you to discuss the issue clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “allocate more funds” and “legislate against smoking.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “Cigrate,” “Governements,” “devolpment,” and “conclussion,” and some word combinations are unnatural, such as “real threat to health” and “on the risk.” Repetition of “serious,” “health,” and “smoking” limits variety. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations; for example, use “a threat to health” and “at risk.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “as,” “which,” and “if.” Most ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms occur across the response. For example, “one of the leading cause” needs a plural noun, “it involve combustion” needs subject–verb agreement, and “it also cause burden” needs an article and a correctly inflected verb. There are also problems in “If it increase the cancer cases,” where the verb form and phrasing are not controlled. Review agreement and articles, then proofread each sentence for its subject and main verb. More accurate complex sentences would improve control without sacrificing the range you are attempting.
