Student answer (Band 6.0)
The question here is whether smoking should be made illegal or not because it contains nicotine which causes dangerous health issues. Some people contend that it should be banned, others believe it shouldn't be because it has a great financial contribution to the goveernment and if we do this it will act as deterent for the general smokers by hampering their rights. I am of the belief that smoking should not be made illegal but government ought to enforce a law against public smoking and regulate the illigal production of cigarette.
On the one side of the specturm are those who thought about the health issues of smoking because it contains harmful components llike nicotine which is very detrimental. Furthermore, they pointed out the people who smoke publicly thus it also affects the general people and the childrens as well.
On the other hand, by cultivating tobacco the farmers earn a lot of money for their lifelihood, if strict regulation are made against it , this would affects their life. For instance, some developing countries earn a great proportion of their financial budget by exporting tobacco and cigarette, also the government get a large amount of tax from that product.
However, in my perspective, there should be a balance for this , like government should regulate the public smoking which pollutes the air and creates a problem for the non-smokers. Furthermore, authorities should surveillance against the unauthorised production of cigarette. By implementing this there will be a transparency among all sorts of critics.
To conclude, ban is not the only solution of smoking because it offers various amenities, one of the most effectful measures is that a law enforcement for that regarding the overall wellbeing of all kinds of individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you oppose making smoking illegal, while supporting restrictions on public smoking and illegal cigarette production. You address both sides by mentioning health risks and the income tobacco provides to farmers and governments. These are relevant points, but some are not fully developed. For example, the claim that prohibition would hamper smokers’ rights is introduced but not explained, and the economic argument would be stronger with a clearer account of how a ban would affect livelihoods or public revenue. Your proposed measures are relevant, though the final reference to “transparency” does not clearly explain their expected benefit. Develop each main reason with a specific explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, contrasting arguments, your own view, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “To conclude” make the organisation easy to recognise. This meets the lower-band expectations securely, with some evidence of more flexible progression. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and links between ideas are not always precise. For instance, “Furthermore” introduces a related point about public smoking without clearly showing how it supports the preceding health argument. The phrase “a balance for this” is also vague, and the conclusion repeats the position without clearly summarising the proposed balance. Use more precise references and make each sentence’s relationship to the previous one explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “detrimental,” “financial budget,” “unauthorised production,” and “overall wellbeing.” This shows an effort to use less common language, and your meaning is generally recoverable. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “great financial contribution to the government,” “cultivating tobacco,” “surveillance against,” and “effectful measures”; these are not natural or precise in context. There are also spelling errors such as “goveernment,” “specturm,” and “illigal.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording, and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if strict regulation are made against it” and a relative clause in “which pollutes the air.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “strict regulation are made” has a number-agreement problem, while “this would affects their life” combines an incorrect verb form with a singular noun where a plural is needed. The opening sentence also joins several ideas in a long, difficult-to-control structure. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and divide sentences when they contain several separate claims.
