Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking could be responsible for severe sicknesses and it ought to be made illegal. I agree with this statement because this kind of activity can lead to addiction which is injurious not only for the body but for the environment as well.

On the one hand, some people claim that smoke a cigarette can calm them down and can built a little community. As I see it, it has far more drawbacks, for instance they are extremely expensive. Talking of bad affects for the body, as the smoke gets inside and reach the lungs, it can cause at first hard cough and any other small consequences in the worst case lung-cancer. In addition, when humans breath the used smoke out it could be worse for people who do not smoke.

On the other hand, smoking expose its harmful impact for the environment. Smoke components can sediment on everything such as leaves of the plants or our clothes. Whereas, it contains carbon-dioxide, it contribute to make the greenhouse-effect stronger and stronger. The worst part of this activity is when the cigarette runs out, people are prone to throw the stub away without any regret for polluting the environment. In addition, if we talk about the production the tobacco plant need a lot of water for growing and while they are harvested farmers use many machines which are consume lots of fuels.

To sum up, the state government should make cigarettes illegal due to their numerous disadvantages they own, particularly owing to the health-damaging effect.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that smoking should be illegal, and you give relevant reasons concerning illness, second-hand smoke, environmental pollution and tobacco production. The response therefore addresses the task and offers more than one line of support. The health argument is the most developed, with a progression from lung effects to risks for non-smokers. However, some points are asserted rather than explained: the claim that smoking creates a community is not explored, and the environmental points about carbon dioxide, cigarette ends and farming are listed with limited explanation of their significance. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasoning behind these examples and address the implications of making smoking illegal, such as enforcement or personal choice.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding summary. The main ideas are generally grouped sensibly: health effects appear first, followed by environmental effects. However, the contrast signposting is not fully logical because both body paragraphs mainly support your position, and “Whereas” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. Some links, including “In addition,” are used mechanically, while the relationship between individual examples could be made clearer. Improve progression by organising each paragraph around one central claim, then explaining and illustrating it, and use linking expressions only when their meaning fits the connection.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “addiction,” “lung-cancer,” “greenhouse-effect,” “polluting” and “production,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “prone to throw the stub away,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. Examples include “severe sicknesses,” “bad affects,” “used smoke,” and “the disadvantages they own”; these weaken precision and naturalness. Spelling and word-form choices such as “carbon-dioxide” and “lung-cancer” also need attention. Aim for accurate collocations and standard forms, for example “serious illnesses,” “harmful effects,” “second-hand smoke,” and “disadvantages they cause.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “because,” “when” and “if,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “I agree with this statement because this kind of activity can lead to addiction.” However, errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction occur in several places: “smoking expose,” “the tobacco plant need,” and “farmers use many machines which are consume” should be revised. There are also problems with infinitives and clause structure in “claim that smoke a cigarette can calm them down” and “it contribute to make.” Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete and correctly connected.
