IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking causes many health problems to our body and should be banned to our country .I agree to this since it causes many dangerous health issues like lung cancer to our body.

Mostly people smokes to relax their mind others do in anxiety and depression. Its like an habit that is made among the individuals to do smoking when their is a party or an event but they dont know the harmful effects of this bad habit. For example when someone smokes he/she dont know that cigarette contains carcinogens which is inhaled during smoking and it reaches to lungs through trachea where it damages and weakens the lungs and gradually in the end lung cancer is diagnosed.

Others do passive smoking i.e,they dont smokes but inhale the pollutant air of people doing smoking sitting besides that person so by inhaling the smoke of cigarette of person doing smoking besides him aslo damages and breaks the tissue of lungs.Serious problems like asthma and liver cirrhosis can occur and gradually decreases the life span of a person due to several damages that has been occured gradually to our body.

After giving relative example regarding to the harmful effects of smoking ,cigarette should be banned by the government and add extra taxes in tobacco industries so that people should avoid these due to expensive like you can say that if you cant afford then dont buy.

I strongly appeal Government and their managing team that smoking should be mae illegal and completely ban in the market so that it cant be reached to the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that smoking should be banned, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, including direct health damage, passive smoking, and the possibility of using higher tobacco taxes to discourage smoking. The explanation of how smoke can harm the lungs is a specific attempt to support your argument. This meets the task well overall, but some points are less fully developed: the claim about liver cirrhosis is not explained, and the tax proposal is introduced without showing how it relates to making smoking illegal. To strengthen the response further, explain the evidence or reasoning behind each claim and address the implications of a complete ban more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall progression from your position, to health effects, to a policy recommendation and conclusion. Paragraphing also helps separate the discussion of smoking and passive smoking from your final appeal. However, the development within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several ideas are joined into long sentences, and links between them can feel mechanical. For example, “After giving relative example” signals a conclusion, but the following sentence combines a ban, extra taxes, and a comment about affordability without clearly showing how these proposals fit together. Some references, such as “these” and “that person,” are not fully clear. Use shorter, more controlled sentences and explicit links that show cause, contrast, or consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “passive smoking,” “carcinogens,” “lung cancer,” and “life span,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing damage to lung tissue. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, sometimes making the meaning less precise. Examples include “health problems to our body,” “do smoking,” and “add extra taxes in tobacco industries.” Some expressions, such as “bad habit,” are repeated or general where more precise wording would strengthen the argument. Aim to learn common collocations for health effects and government policy, and check spelling and word forms, including “occurred” and “made.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences that explain causes and effects, so there is some variety in sentence structure. The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to make parts of the response difficult to read. For example, “Mostly people smokes” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “they dont smokes” combines an incorrect auxiliary pattern with agreement. Several sentences run together, particularly the explanation beginning “For example when someone smokes,” and punctuation is often missing. Practise building accurate complex sentences with clear clauses, and check each sentence for a complete structure, correct verb form, and appropriate punctuation.
