Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of visitor visited Caryl Island for the first time and those who were returning visitors from 2000 to 2008.

Overall the number of returning visitors is more than individuals visiting first time.

The trend showed that there were a few number of returing visitors at first in 2000 which continued to grow gradually over the years till 2006 . However, nealy 8000 people visited the Caryl Island in 2000. The numbers started decreasing over the next 2 years and reached to 4000 visitors. While 10000 people visited the place again till the year 2002 and proportion continued to ascend over the next 4 years and numbers reached up to approximatelly 15000 people who revisited the island. In 2006 there was recorded a sudden drop of 2000 revisitors till 2008.

The numbers of visitors continued to grow after 2002 drop and reached by 12000 first time visitors in 2008.

The trend illustrated that people preffered revisting the Caryl Island over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify both visitor groups and give an overview that returning visitors generally outnumbered first-time visitors. You also report several key figures, including about 8,000 first-time visitors in 2000, 10,000 returning visitors in 2002, and the returning-visitors peak of roughly 15,000 in 2006. However, the overview is too broad: first-time visitors actually outnumbered returning visitors in 2000, so “the number of returning visitors is more” needs qualification. Some trends are also unclear or inaccurate. Returning visitors rose from 3,000 in 2000 to 10,000 in 2002, rather than starting with “a few” and growing gradually; first-time visitors fell to 4,000 in 2002, then rose to about 11,800 by 2008. A more precise overview and clearer comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and details about the two visitor groups. Time markers such as “in 2000,” “till the year 2002,” and “in 2006” help the reader follow the period. However, the progression within the main paragraph is difficult to track because the account shifts between series without clearly signalling each change. For example, “However, nearly 8000 people visited” moves to first-time visitors, while the following sentence returns to returning visitors. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “over the next” and “the trend.” Organise the details into separate paragraphs for each series, and use clear comparisons to connect them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a line graph, including “decreasing,” “ascend,” “sudden drop,” and “reached,” so the main trends are generally understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording with “visitors,” “people,” and “individuals.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “a few number,” “visited the place again,” and “proportion continued to ascend,” since the graph shows visitor numbers rather than a proportion. Spelling errors, including “returing,” “nealy,” “approximatelly,” and “preffered,” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise terms such as “visitor numbers,” “rose steadily,” and “returning visitors,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “while,” and the overall meaning can usually be understood. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or awkwardly joined. “While 10000 people visited the place again till the year 2002” is a dependent clause without a clear main clause, and the long sentence beginning “The trend showed” combines several changes in a way that makes relationships unclear. There are also errors in articles, number agreement, and verb patterns, as in “the number of visitor” and “reached to 4000 visitors.” Use complete sentences with one main trend per sentence, and check singular/plural forms and verb constructions.
