Student answer (Band 8.0)

The line graph compares the number of first-time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the number of returning visitors increased much more than first-time visitors. Returning visitors reached the highest point in 2006, while first-time visitors fell at first and then gradually increased.

In 2000, there were about 8,000 first-time visitors, compared with only 3,000 returning visitors. By 2002, the number of first-time visitors had dropped significantly to around 4,000. However, it then started to rise, reaching approximately 6,000 in 2004 and 9,500 in 2006. By the end of the period, in 2008, the figure had increased further to about 12,000.

In contrast, the number of returning visitors grew rapidly throughout most of the period. It climbed from around 3,000 in 2000 to 10,000 in 2002 and then rose steadily to 12,000 in 2004. The figure reached a peak of about 15,000 in 2006 before falling slightly to around 13,500 in 2008.

In conclusion, although first-time visitors showed steady growth after an initial decline, returning visitors remained higher for most of the period and recorded the highest number of visitors overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and providing relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview is clear and highlights the key differences between the two visitor categories. You have made effective comparisons throughout the response, such as noting that returning visitors remained higher for most of the period. The data is accurately reported, and the structure allows for a logical progression of information. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently highlight the most significant features, perhaps by explicitly contrasting the starting and ending points more sharply.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the first category, the second category, and a summary. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In contrast', 'By the end of the period', and 'However', which help the reader follow the flow of information. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between ideas is smooth. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'reached the highest point', 'fell at first', 'grew rapidly', and 'recorded the highest number' are used accurately. There is a good attempt to use varied terminology to describe trends. While the vocabulary is appropriate and natural, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations related to data interpretation (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'surpassed', 'plateaued') would further enhance the lexical range and precision of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'although first-time visitors showed steady growth after an initial decline'. The grammar is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly to separate ideas. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as using participle phrases (e.g., 'Starting at 3,000 in 2000, the number of returning visitors...') to increase the sophistication of your sentence construction.
