The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graph illustrates the number of first-time visitors and visitors who visited again in Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, in both sections, some fluctuations are noticeable; at the outset, first-time visitors decreased, and after that, it shows the rising trend. However, the number of returning visitors grew rapidly, but at the end, a gradual drop can be observed.

A cursory glance at the graph is adequate to reveal that, in proportion to first-time travellers, it begins at 8000 in 2000. Nevertheless, it drops drastically in 2000 and remains at only 4000 tourists. In the subsequent years, the number of voyagers bounced dramatically from 4000 to 12000 during the time period.

Furthermore, looking at the table, it is clearly seen that among the tourists who travelled back to the island, the numbers escalated drastically between 3000 and 15000. Nevertheless, a slight plunge is reported from 15000 to nearly 14000 throughout the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the trends for both visitor categories. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you state that first-time visitors 'drops drastically in 2000', which is confusing as 2000 is the starting point. Additionally, the description of the returning visitors' growth as 'between 3000 and 15000' is vague and lacks precision regarding the specific years. To improve, ensure that data points are clearly linked to their respective years and avoid contradictory statements about the timeline. The overview is present but could be more clearly synthesised.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used in contexts where they do not fit perfectly, such as the transition into the second body paragraph referencing a 'table' when the task provides a line graph. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within the paragraphs could be improved by better referencing of the data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'rising trend', 'escalated', and 'plunge'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'voyagers' to describe tourists, and the reference to a 'table' instead of a 'graph'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise terminology. The vocabulary is adequate to convey the main points, but more sophisticated collocations would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'visitors who visited again in Caryl Island' (should be 'to Caryl Island') and 'in proportion to first-time travellers' (which is used incorrectly here). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using prepositions correctly, as well as refining the accuracy of complex sentence constructions.
